Randy Wolf Signs with San Diego

Randy Wolf, who accepted less money to pitch for the Dodgers in his home town in 2007, signed a one year, $4 million contract with the San Diego Padres. Wolf spent the last half of the season on the disabled list and the Dodgers bought out the option year of his contract for $500,000.

Most Los Angeles followers thought it would be the Dodgers who re-signed him, albeit at less that his original $9 million but apparently the club was not all that interested. His injury background was probably the deciding factor.

In an email to the Los Angeles Times, Wolf said that his rehabilitation was progressing smoothly and that he planned to start throwing soon. He said the Dodgers were among the teams that had expressed an interest in signing him for the 2008 season but that he was unsure about how much they wanted him.

On todays market, not offering $4 million for a pitcher that won nine games before the all-star break is no interest at all.

Wolf, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley, gave the Dodgers a hometown discount in November 2006 by signing a deal that was guaranteed for one season. He won seven of his first 10 decisions, posting a 3.68 earned-run average through June 1.

But then shoulder problems reared their ugly head. He pitched his last game July 3 and underwent exploratory surgery in early September. Wolf finished the season with a 9-6 record and 4.73 ERA.

He pitched 102 2/3 innings, his most since 136 2/3 innings for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2004. Wolf also sat out large parts of the 2005 and 2006 seasons while recovering from ligament-replacement elbow surgery.

Tony Jackson of the Los Angeles Daily News, reports that the Dodgers and Diamondbacks will meet in Tucson on March 21, making four Cactus League games that have been scheduled -- March 20 against the White Sox, March 21 against the D-Backs, March 23 against the Rockies and March 26 against the Royals.

Another Spring Game in Phoenix?-- A club official that contacted Jackson said that the schedules have not been officially finalized, including the trip to China, and that Major League Baseball was given two spring training schedules, one if the trip is a go and the other if plans fall through -- meaning the entire team would stay in Florida for the entire season.

Of few the clubs who have released their schedule, the last game scheduled for the Dodgers appears to be March 18 against the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

And with the trip to China tentatively set for March 14-15, Jackson feels that the entire team -- both the half that goes to China and the half that stays behind in Vero -- would congregate in Phoenix for the final eight days of camp before returning to Los Angeles for those four exhibitions with the Angels (one) and Red Sox (three).
