Sometimes a promotion to the 40-man roster creates a raising of the eyebrows. Such this year is the case of Alvarez. After all, nowhere in his overall record is there any indication that he's a promising enough prospect to warrant such a move

. Yet, Alvarez has his supporters hence the decision. He's the kind of pitcher that has the innate ability to conquer- a mid-90's fast ball and some interesting secondary pitches. For all that, though, he's wildly inconsistent; you never know what you're going to see.

For instance, this past season pitching for Inland Empire, he started against High Desert and was bombed for seven hits and the same number of runs in just two-thirds of an inning. The next time out, against the same team, he pitched six innings and allowed just one hit.

Overall, though, he was only 7-10 with a 5.60 ERA. Opponents battered him for a .291 average. He's not imposing in size but is a maximum effort guy.

In all, then, there's sharply divided opinions on his future. He has given indications that he's learning and could become a contributor, probably in relief. He'll have to to justify his current status as a member of the 40-man roster.

If he has a good spring, he could start the year in Jacksonville.
