Injuries, Losses Plague Dodgers

Los Angeles built 1-0, 3-1, 4-2 and 5-2 leads only to get hit with a five spot in the sixth inning and despite a late rally, lost 10-9. The two teams used 13 pitchers who allowed the 19 runs on 32 hits before a bumper crowd of 10,131.

The Dodger fans in Arizona are delighted the team is there, Dodger players, for the most part, like the facilities and the closeness of teams and the front office likes the big crowds the team draws -- but for all of that they still aren't winning.

They won their first game against the Chicago White Sox but have since lost to Arizona, Anaheim, Colorado and Kansas City with only Milwaukee on the schedule today.

Hiroki Kuroda was tagged for seven hits and three runs before leaving in the sixth.

He has had spotty spring season and now sports a 5.04 earned run average. His record:

Joe Biemel again failed to get an out and Ramon Troncoso and Matt Myers were roughed up as the lead disappeared.

Greg Jones got a couple needed outs but Jonathan Broxton gave up the 10th run in the eighth inning.

Rafael Furcal knocked in three runs to run his total to 15. Included was his fourth homer of the season leading off the game.

Andre Ethier singled and whacked his sixth home run, Mark Sweeney had a pair of doubles and Chin-Lung Hu, filling in with élan at third base, had three hits. Rookie Blake DeWitt added a pair of runs batted in/

Trailing 9-6, the Dodgers mounted a three run rally in the ninth close within a run but Matt Kemp was retired with two men on base.

A two-run single by Furcal and an RBI single by Delwyn Young fell just short.

Takashi Saito had been slated to pitch against the Royals, but instead, he was held out with tightness in his right buttocks.

Today Brad Penny makes a tune-up start against the Brewers.

Roster Moves
Manager Joe Torre said instead of making cuts in Arizona, the entire 40-man squad will make the trip to Los Angeles for games against the Angels and Red Sox.

That will give the coaches and staff extra time to sort out who's staying and who's going down.

The trip to China, while a great honor and a great Public Relations move, made it difficult for manager Joe Torre to see his entire squad and they are going down to the final deadline before cutting the club down to size.

Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra may join Jason Schmidt and Andy LaRoche on the DL. Schmidt is still months away in his recovery from shoulder surgery. LaRoche will be out until mid-May after thumb ligament surgery.

Rumors, Rumors
Rumors still swirl around the Dodgers, claiming a trade involving a third base may come at any minute.

The Kansas City Star reports that the Dodgers have offered Jonathan Meloan and Miguel Pinango for third baseman Esteban German, a 29-year old infielder/outfielder/cook and bottle washer who has a six year average of .286 over only 277 games with 7 homers and 80 runs batted in. Rumor II has the Dodgers coveting Houston's 35-year-old Mark Loretta to fill in for third baseman Nomar Garciaparra. Loretta has the same resume although he has played 1,518 games and has hit .298 with 72 homers and 566 runs batted in.

Even if you are a betting man, don't put any money on either of these rumors.

Dodger Blue Notes-- Kent tested his strained right hamstring by sprinting in the outfield and seems improved but Torre gave indications that the club is leaning toward putting Kent on the 15-day disabled list, as well as Nomar Garciaparra, pointing out that with the move being retroactive, they would miss only six days.

"I'm more optimistic about Kent, which is one thing I can't say about Nomar right now, Torre said. "Jeff could be ready, but is he totally comfortable to do everything? I don't think either one will take a great deal of at-bats to get ready.

"Garciaparra still can't swing a bat."

With a number of pitchers still on the cusp, the Dodgers can't find innings for 20-year-old pitcher Clayton Kershaw. He threw a light bullpen session in Phoenix and might pitch on Tuesday after a scheduled short start by Opening Day starter Brad Penny.
