Dodgers Lose Game, Perhaps Penny

Roy Campanella said, "You have to be a man to play baseball, but you have to have a lot of little boy in you." That means playing through pain without telling anyone. "I knew I probably shouldn't have went out there," Penny said. "That would have put the team in a horrible position." He finally admitted something was wrong with his shoulder after allowing seven runs in a 12-7 loss to Detroit.

The Dodgers' opening-day starter, Penny (5-9) extended his winless streak to eight games and lost his seventh consecutive decision. He was charged with seven runs and seven hits to raise his earned-run average to 5.88 and didn't strike out a batter.

Penny said he felt discomfort while warming up in the bullpen. He's been bothered by a sore shoulder for most of the season. Penny is 0-7 in his last eight starts.

"I tried to get through it. It's the same thing that's been going on. I thought I was over it. The last two starts were pretty good but it's back again and I've just got to get it checked out." Penny' record slid to 5-9.

?Penny has been taking oral doses of an anti-inflammatory drug before starts for most of the season to lessen the pain in his shoulder he now says he has been feeling for weeks.

"I didn't feel good in the first inning, and I didn't feel good in the bullpen," Penny told reporters. "I feel it on every pitch, so that makes it tough. It affects everything. The big thing is location. When you know it's going to hurt, you don't really want to throw it."

His earned run average has soared to 5.88 and the ERA for the starting rotation drops by nearly half a run (4.43 to 3.98) when you remove Penny's numbers from the totals.

Ironically, the incident happened on a day that the Dodgers finally scored some runs.

Andre Ethier homered and had four RBIs but the Dodgers have lost four straight and 16 of their last 22. James Loney added a single and a pair of doubles and Delwyn Young singled three times. The trio accounted for eight of the Dodgers 13 hits.

Matt Kemp returned from his two-game suspension with an RBI infield single. Loney has a 12-game hitting streak, batting .405. Young is batting .345 in his last 12 games.

?Penny retired the Tigers in order in the first two innings and an inning-ending double play held Detroit to one run in the third.

Then the Tigers exploded for six hits off Penny. Two were two-run homers by Miguel Cabrera and Marcus Thames. Another was an RBI triple by Curtis Granderson.

Scott Proctor allowed four more runs, three of them unearned after an error by Angel Berroa, and the game was out of hand.

Penny's health could determine his future with the Dodgers. They can buy out the final year of Penny's contract for $2 million. If they pick up the option, Penny will earn $9.25 million.

The probable candidate to replace Penny would be left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo, who has posted a 3-1 record and 2.01 ERA primarily as a middle reliever.

Both the Giants and Diamondbacks won and poor play throughout the N.L. West has allowed San Diego back in the race. They are now in third place just a game behind the Dodgers.

?LHP Clayton Kershaw (0-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. LHP Nate Robertson (4-6, 5.88 ERA) oppose each other in the final game of the series. In his last outing, Kershaw pitched into the sixth inning with only one run scoring while he was on the mound, while a second scored on a reliever's wild pitch.

Robertson earned his third quality start of the season in his last start against the White Sox. He went 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out four.

Dodger Blue Notes-- Angel Berroa became a father for the second time yesterday, but he won't be joining his wife and new daughter until after the Dodgers' series in Detroit is complete. He'll fly to the Dominican Republic after today's game and, taking advantage of the Monday off-day, is expected to be back with the club for Tuesday night's series opener in Cincinnati. ...Torre said outfielder Andruw Jones' surgically repaired right knee was "a little sore" after an aggressive workout Thursday, but that everything was fine and he's continuing his recovery. ...Torre also said Jason Schmidt was able to play long toss, but there was no date on when he would resume his rehabilitation. Also, the rehabilitation assignment for backup catcher Gary Bennett has been interrupted because he aggravated the foot condition that put him on the disabled list.
