Sands' Grand Slam Boosts Coasties

Although the Dominican Summer League is in it's fourth week, and Ogden has lost their first three games, the Gulf Coast League Dodgers opened action yesterday with a 7-1 win over the Mets behind the pitching of Eduardo Perez and Beyker Furctuoso. Five unearned runs cost Ogden their home opener to Orem 11-6 and the Red Sox topped the Dominican Dodgers 7-4 despite a home run by Alexis Crispin.

Raptors Lose Home Opener
Despite a brand-new field and 6,476 anxious fans in attendance, the Ogden Raptors fell to 0-3 when they helped Orem to an 11-6 victory. While the Raptors collected 10 hits, most of the fireworks were left to the visitors and the post-game fireworks show.

Poor fielding cost Ogden five unearned runs and helped the Owlz break open a tie ballgame with two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh after the Raptors had taken an early lead.

The Dodgers #14 selection Clay Calfee drove in Ogden's first Lindquist Field run of the season. Kyle Orr, who led the inning off with a single, was moving on a hit-and-run and was safe at second despite on a grounder hit by Matt Wallach. He scored on Calfee's liner. Elian Herrera doubled, Devaris Gordon added an RBI single and Herrera scored on a wild pitch.

Starter Robert Boothe, an All-Japan college all-star from Tokyo, tied for the Pioneer League lead with eight strikeouts in five innings. The right-hander fanned four straight at one point but left with the game tied 4-4.

Reliever Jordan Roberts (0-1) was tagged with four runs, two earned, and took the loss, allowing five hits. Luis Vazquez pitched the final three innings for the Raptors, giving up three runs -- all unearned -- on three hits.

After the four-run outburst in the second, the Raptors scored again in the ninth, when Kyle Russell singled in Pedro Baez and scored on a Wallach grounder.

Kyle Orr and Pedro Baez led the Raptors with two hits apiece.

The loss left Ogden manager Mike Brumley looking for his first win with the Dodgers' rookie league affiliate. Orem has outscored the Raptors 30-14 in the first three games of the season.

The two teams face each other again tonight, then return to Orem for a pair of games. Monday, the Raptors start a five-game homestand, facing Idaho Falls three times before again meeting Orem.

GCL Dodgers Lose Opener
The Coasties rode the strong right arm of Eduardo Perez and Beyker Frutuoso (1-0) who in tandem allowed four hits and a single run over the first eight innings of a 7-1 win over the Mets. Luis Ferreas closed the game out with a scoreless ninth.

The Dodgers were held to a pair of singles, both by Joris Bert, over the first six innings. A pair of walks and a double play allowed the tying run in the seventh without a hit.

They broke out in the eighth. A walk and an error on a sacrifice bunt opening the inning and Johan Garcia singled to load the bases. Gerald Sands, the Dodgers 25th round pick, gave the Dodgers a 5-1 lead with a grand slam home run. Bert's third hit of the game added another run.

In the ninth, Johan Garcia doubled and scored on a ground ball to close out the Dodgers scoring.

Bert collected three of the Dodgers seven hits. Garcia doubled and singled.

Red Sox Pop Dodgers
In a game marred by seven errors, the Red Sox struck early, fought off a Dodger rally, and held on to win a 7-4 decision. With the loss the Dodgers slip to 9-7 and trail the Giants by two games.

The two clubs combined for 23 hits and received 15 walks but left 24 runners stranded in the almost three hour game.

Jose Dominguez (0-1) started and battled through three wild pitches before leaving the game in the fourth having allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits in 3.2 innings. Amauri Guzman, Joel Lima and Charlie Mirabal followed on the mound and were equally mistreated.

The Sox led 5-0 before the Dodgers could get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh.

Alexis Crispin opened the inning with a home run to right field and with two out and Rafael Aybar on first base with a walk, Enily Morales singled to drive in Aybar; Bladimir Franco doubled and Marlon Sucre scored two with another double to cut the lead to 5-4.

The Red Sox scored twice in the top of the ninth and although errors in the eighth and ninth allowed Dodger runners, they were left on base.

Morales had three hits and boosted his average to .352, Aviles and Franco had a pair of hits each.
