Dodgers Ink 18 of 45 2008 Draftees

The Dodgers have signed 18 of their 2008 draft selections and sent them to Ogden in the Pioneer League and the Dodgers of the Gulf Coast League. #14 OF Lenell McGee and #30 Garrett Green have not been assigned.

Right-hander Josh Lindblom, a closer from Purdue University, wasn't supposed to have to travel far after being signed last week to a $650,000 bonus. Lindblom was assigned to Great Lakes, which plays in the heart of Big Ten country in Midland, Mich.

But Lindblom did end up flying across the country anyway, because Dodgers assistant player development director Chris Haydock invited him to Los Angeles to check out Dodger Stadium. Lindblom hung out during batting practice and had a conversation with Dodgers rookie third baseman Blake DeWitt, the two discovering they actually played against each other on a travel team in the Midwest during the summer of 2004.

"I have never been here or seen the stadium before," said Lindblom, the Dodgers 2008 second-round pick. "It's an awesome experience. It definitely puts a hunger in your stomach that makes you want to get back here."

Lindblom is the club's only draft pick who wasn't assigned to Rookie ball.

Logan White, the Dodgers' assistant general manager for scouting, said last week that he "felt like pushing him a little bit."

"I was a little bit surprised," said Lindblom, who will fly to Lansing, Mich., this morning and join the Loons in time for their road game there tonight. "I was supposed to go to Ogden, and that would have been a little different scenery. But it will be good to be close to home so my family can see me play, and the competition level will probably be little bit higher there."

The plan is to convert Lindblom to starting after he builds up his pitch count.

After telling Florida State coaches throughout the season that he planned to skip his senior season to enter professional baseball, Tony Delmonico may play for the Seminoles in 2009.

?Tony Delmonico was selected by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the MLB draft earlier this month.
