Raptors Beat League-Leading Casper

The Ogden Raptors dropped the league-leading Casper Ghosts 5-3 to record their fourth win of the season as Jon Michael Redding fanned six of the first batters he faced. The Dominican Dodgers dropped a rain-shortened 5-3 game to the Cubs2 and the Coasties were rained out.

Rejuvenated Raptors Smack Casper
Raptors manager Mike Brumley had what one player said was a "little reality check" during the bus trip to Casper and hit team took it to hart, dumping the league-leading Ghosts (10-5) 5-3.

The Raptors (4-11) have won two of their last three games. They rang up a 5-1 lead before Casper closed the gap late in the game.

Starter Jon Michael Redding struck out six of nine Casper batters in the first three innings to get the Raptors off on the right foot.

Marcel Prado (1-1) earned the win and along with Josh Walter and Luis Garcia, the staff combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed only four hits.

"We played solid defense," Brumley told the Ogden Standard. "Getting in at 4 a.m., with all that happened (the on-field brawl Monday), the guys came ready to play."

The Ogden manager would only say about the meeting on the bus that "We talked about overcoming the tough start and trying to swing it attitude-wise. I asked are we going to believe in ourselves or we going to believe in who we are playing?"

Third baseman Pedro Baez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Devaris Gordon finished 2-for-4. Kyle Russell and Matt Wallach each added doubles. Baez said it was probably his best game of the season.

The Raptors play the Ghosts in Ogden tonight and Thursday before traveling to Casper for a 3-game series.

Probably Suspensions Ahead
Brumley anticipates each player involved will receive at least a three-game suspension for leaving the dugout or their position on the field to join in a melee that began after Devaris Strange-Gordon was hit by the second pitch of the game.

No rulings have been received from the Pioneer League but they could come at any time.

The fight, now being shown on YouTube.com, resulted in a 31-minute delay and nine ejections, including Kyle Russell, Brian Ruggiano, Devaris Gordon, Lyndon Poole, pitching coach Craig Bjornson.

Dodgers Lose Rain-Shortened Game
The Dominican Dodgers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Cubs2 in a game shortened to 6 1/2 innings by rain.

Christian Gonzalez (0-3) deserved a better fate. The righthander allowed four hits and three runs, one earned, and struck out four in four innings but was tagged with his third loss.

The first two Cub runs scored after a pair of singles and an outfield error. The decisive run came across in the fourth without a hit. Gonzalez hit the first Cub, he moved up on a passed ball and later score on a grounder.

Wilner Charles first RBI of the season scored Marlon Sucre in the fifth for the Dodgers after Sucre and Rafael Aybar had singled in succession. Pedro Tavarez singled to drive in Adrian Aviles, who had walked and advanced to second a wild pitch, in the sixth.

Marlon Sucre had two of the Dodgers seven hits.
