Morris Tough in Great Lakes Loss

Las Vegas and Jon Meloan were pounded 10-2 by Tucson. Jacksonville's furious rally, including a pair of homers by Jamie Hoffman, fell short an am 8-7 loss to Mississippi. Inland Empire and Eric Cyr were edged out 3-1 by Modesto. An error cost Great Lakes a 5 -3 loss at Burlington despite six strong innings from Bryan Morris.

Sidewinders Bite 51s
Tucson rapped starter Jon Meloan for nine hits and six runs, knocking him out in the fifth inning. The Las Vegas righthander suffered his ninth loss against four wins in the 10-2 contest.

The last-place Sidewinders rapped out 17 hits against Meloan, Greg Miller, Brian Akin before Fernando Felix, making his Las Vegas debut, worked a scoreless eighth.

Meloan coasted into the fifth inning with a 2-1 lead but things went wrong at that point. He allowed five hits, including a home run, before he left in favor or Miller, who threw a wild pitch, walked a pair and gave up two hits.

Las Vegas scored a run in the third on singles by A.J. Ellis and Xavier Paul and added another in the fourth on an Angel Chavez single. But with the bases loaded an none out, Ellis, Meloan and Jason Repko went out in order.

The 51s managed only two more hits the rest of the game.

Chavez had a pair of singles; Terry Tiffee and Ramon Martinez doubled for Las Vegas.

Late Sun Rally Falls Short
Jacksonville trailed Mississippi 8-1 in the sixth inning before they could get their bats untracked. Then they scored the next six runs and put the tying run on base in the ninth but could never get closer, losing 8-7.

Starter Cody White was slapped around for eight hits, four walks and seven runs, six earned, before leaving after five trailing 7-1. Jacobo Meque, just up from Inland Empire, allowed one more run before 18-year-old Luis Ferraras, promoted all the way from the Gulf Coast League, and Zach Hammes shut the Braves down on two hits over the final three innings.

Jamie Hoffmann hit a pair of solo homers to drive in the Suns' first two runs. It was Hoffmann's second two-homer game in the past four days. Jacksonville scored twice more in the seventh and three times in the eighth.

The hottest Suns' hitter, Adolfo Gonzalez, had four hits for the second time this season. Gonzalez's is 19-for-35 in his past 12 games to raise his batting average to a team-best .317.

Before the game, RHP Jesus Rodriguez (1-2, 3.00) was reassigned to Great Lakes.

RHP James McDonald (4-2, 3.29) is scheduled to start tonight in game three of the five-game series.

66ers Lose a Tight One
In a rare, mid-week afternoon game, the Modesto Nuts squeezed out a 3-1 decision over Inland Empire. Veteran Eric Cyr (1-1) worked seven very strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out six but took the loss.

Austin Gallagher doubled home leadoff man Trayvon Robinson, who reached base three times, in the first inning but the 66ers could never get on the board again, collecting only three more hits over the final eight innings against the Modesto knuckleballer.

Tommy Giles also had a good day, with two singles and two walks. Robinson added two hits and Gallagher's double accounted for all the Inland Empire hits.

The 66ers did load the based in the eighth on three walks but were unable to push any of them across the plate.

Jordan Pratt and David Pfeiffer allowed only an unearned run between them in relief of Cyr.

RHP James Adkins will face Nuts right handeder Esmil Rogers tonight.

Error Stings Loons in 5-3 Loss
When things are going badly, the slightest mistake, one that would go unnoticed normally, turns into a disaster/ When that happened it cost the Loons a 5-3 decision at Burlington.

New Loons third baseman Brandon Taylor made his first error of the season in the seventh inning with two on and two out and the score tied 1-1. A two run single broke the tie and eventually gave the Bees the win.

The Loons scored first in the fourth inning when Brian Mathews' RBI single gave the Loons an early 1-0 lead.

The Bees responded in the sixth on a wild pitch that catcher Kenley Jansen blocked but couldn't find near home plate.

The Bees tacked on two more runs in the eighth on a home run and added an insurance run to make it 5-1.

Great Lakes fought back, scoring twice in the eighth on Andrew Lambo's 10th home run, a two-run shot.

Starter Bryan Morris pitched six innings and gave up two-hits, allowing a run and striking out eight. Despite picking up a no-decision, Morris has compiled a 1-0 record and a 1.80 ERA in 20 innings since the Midwest League All-Star break.

Bob Zimmermann allowed four runs (two earned) out of the bullpen and was tagged with his first loss.

Lambo finished with two of the five Great Lakes hits.

The Loons continue their six-game homestand and three-game set against the Burlington Bees tonight at Dow Diamond.
