Owlz Cut Raptors Season Short

Ogden's remarkable season ended Monday when Orem outlasted the 9-7 in the first round of the Pioneer League Playoffs. The Owlz won the first game 5-1, Ogden battled back to win the second 8-6 in 10 innings. Orem and Great Falls meet in first game of the Championship round.

Defending champion Orem and has won three of the last four league titles. Ogden appeared in the playoffs for the first time since 2005.

Ogden starter Jon Dutton, among the league leaders with nine wins this season, lasted three innings. He allowed eight hits, five runs (four earned) and struck out three.

Teammates Elisaul Pimentel, Marcel Prado were also roughed up during the night as Orem collected 15 hits. Daigoro Rondon allowed only a single hit and no runs in his two innings.

Ogden had nine hits with Steven Caseres finishing 2-for-4 at the plate and Clay Calfee going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Owlz established their dominance early in the game. Tony Delmonico and Steven Caseres hit two-out, back-to-back home runs in the first inning to give the Raptors a 2-0 lead.

The Owlz bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of singles, a triple and an error, and never trailed the again in the contest. They increased their lead to 8-3 inn the fourth inning and them beat off a late Raptors rally.

Ogden closed to 4-3 in the second on singles by Matt Wallach and Pedro Baez, plus walks to Brian Ruggiano and Nick Buss.

Dutton was touched for a home run in the third; Pimentel allowed three runs in the fourth inning before Prado rescued him and then he allowed a two-out, RBI single in the sixth for the ninth, and final, Orem run.

The Raptors added two runs inn the top of the sixth on Caseres singled, Kyle Russell lined an RBI double and scored on Calfee's double. Wallach's sac fly cut the margin to 9-6 in the eighth and in the ninth, Calfee singled and Ruggiano walked. Calfee's ground ball scored one but Delmonico popped out to end the game and the season.

After opening the season 0-8, Ogden finished 43-35 overall and 23-14 in the second half. The Raptors lost the season series to Orem 5-14.

The series' loss is the latest in a string of playoff defeats to the Owlz. In 2005 the Raptors lost to the Owlz, 2-1. The results were the same for Ogden in 2003 and 2002. Ogden hasn't reached the league finals since 1996 when it lost to Helena, 2-0.

Playoff Stats
Steve Caseres and Matt Wallach led the Raptors attack in the playoffs, hitting .462 and .429 respectively. Clay Calfee, who only played in two of the games as did Wallach, hit .375.

Daigoro Rondon, who was promoted from the Gulf Coast League late in the season, and Cole St. Clair, were the the only pitchers to work in two games. Cole was unscored upon in two innings and Daigoro finished with a 2.06 ERA. Starter Jon Redding, although he lost the opener, finished with a 2.08 ERA. Luis Garcia, who won the second game in relief, had an even 3.00 earned run average.
