Lowe Has Post Season Experience

If it's true that no two playoff runs are ever the same, Derek Lowe is like a first-timer as the Dodgers battle their way to the National League West title. But Lowe, a veteran of five post-seasons and nine postseason series, still brings something to the table that the youngish Dodgers desperately need.

"Every year is different," he said. "I think this year has been so unique because of the unfortunate injuries we have had and the amount of players we have used. There have been such highs and lows. We lost eight in a row and came back and won 10 out of 11. It had been kind of a roller-coaster ride.

But it doesn't matter how you get in. No matter who wins this division, somebody is going to say that team is going to get swept because it only finished 'X' number of games over .500, but it doesn't matter.

"This team is so different from what it was two months ago. We are a team that can go deep into the playoffs."

Going deep into the postseason is a subject on which Lowe is well versed.

Four years ago, with Manny Ramirez as his teammate, he won the clinching games of all three postseason rounds for the Boston Red Sox, who famously ended their 86-year world championship drought.

In Sunday's start, Lowe pitched seven scoreless innings against the Giants, allowing just five hits and three walks, all of which were intentional. He threw 120 pitches, one short of his season high, and reduced his ERA over four starts this month to 0.66. Over his past nine starts, dating to Aug. 11, Lowe is 6-1 with a 1.33 ERA.

"That experience is huge," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "It's not only what he does in between the lines, but also as a mentor, whether it's in the dugout or the clubhouse. This time of year, I think young guys pretty much look at the guys who have been through it before just to watch how they behave, and Derek has certainly never shied away from competition."

Notes and Quotes
--RHP Brad Penny's season apparently is over. Penny, who has made two relief appearances since his most recent activation from the disabled list on Sept. 10, received a cortisone injection in the AC joint above his right shoulder Friday to relieve discomfort. Penny then tried to throw Saturday but experienced more discomfort.

--RHP Cory Wade threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, to lower his ERA to 2.22. Since coming off the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 28, Wade has a 1.10 ERA, allowing two earned runs in 16 1/3 innings over 12 appearances. He leads all Dodgers relievers with a 1.77 ERA at home this season.

--OF Andre Ethier went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles, raising his September average to a major league best .468 (29-for-62). Ethier now has 45 multiple-hit games, second on the club to Matt Kemp's 46. Ethier is batting .425 (34-for-80) since LF Manny Ramirez was inserted into the third spot in the order directly behind him.

--LF Manny Ramirez went 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts and walked three times, once intentionally. Ramirez has now gone hitless in just 10 of 48 games with the Dodgers. He homered twice Saturday night, his 53rd career multiple-homer game, putting him 10th all-time in that category. --INF Mark Sweeney pinch-hit to lead off the 10th inning and grounded to second. Sweeney is now 1-for-12 with two walks in his past 14 pinch-hitting appearances. The second-most prolific pinch hitter of all-time, he is hitting just .162 (12-for-74) as a pinch hitter this season, with 13 walks and a sacrifice fly.

: 1,134 -- Games missed this season, through September 19, by Dodgers' players on the disabled list. That included 122 by shortstop Rafael Furcal, the club's leadoff man and offensive catalyst before back problems ended at least his regular season in early May. It also included three separate DL stints, totaling 107 games missed by veteran infielder Nomar Garciaparra, who has been shelved six times in his three seasons with the Dodgers.

Quote to Note: "I don't think they could see. The windows were tinted." -- Dodgers reliever Joe Beimel, discussing an incident that occurred in Pittsburgh in which the SUV he and teammates Russell Martin and Delwyn Young were riding in, which was driven by Pirates outfielder Nyjer Morgan, was pulled over by police because the window tinting was too dark. Beimel, the only member of the foursome who is white, was asked whether he felt the traffic stop was a case of racial profiling.
