Dodger Relievers Make Their Mark

The Dodgers led the National League in relief pitching in 2003, posting a 2.46 earned run average. The nearly did it again in 2004 (3.01), losing the title on the final day when they lost a meaningless game to the Giants by a 10-0 margin. In 2008 they were second to Philadelphia by a margin of .12, 3.34 to the Phils 3.24.

No less than five members of the 2008 bullpen: Jonathan Broxton, Chan Ho Park, Hong-Chih Kuo, Takashi Saito and Cory Wade put their names on the exclusive LADugout all time relief charts.

Saito, Broxton and Kuo now have their names on the strikeouts per nine inning list. Others from the 2008 staff earning spots are Saito, Wade and Kuo are on the opponents batting average; Kuo on earned run average and Wade on the hits per nine and walks allowed per nine innings.

Eric Gagne was nearly flawless for three seasons. And and he tops almost every category, even holding the top three spots in a couple of them.

But when it became clear Gagne was finished, Takashi Saito was given a quick call from the minor leagues and he responded in a manner that converted even his detractors in the front office who had opposed even signing him.

He is second only to Gagne on the charts and Jonathan Broxton is threatening to dominate in a number of departments.
