How Obtained- Signed as a free agent November, 2006

Edwin Fernando Rodriguez Contreras has a name longer than his professional career. Signed as a free agent late in 2006, his first professional season saw him go 3-1, 3.30 at the age of 18 in the Dominican Summer League.

He moved up the ladder quickly, most young Dominican players spend at least two and maybe three on the island before getting an invitation to move over to the mainland.

But moved he did and he hit the ground running, pitching for the Gulf Coast Dodgers in their final season at Vero Beach he opened a number of eyes when he went 5-0 with a 2.40 earned run average over 11 games, nine of them starts. His earned run average was fourth in the GCL.

He allowed only 44 hits in 54.2 innings (7.24 per nine innings) and struck out 34 while walking only 10. His WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) was a dazzling 1.02. He limited opposing batters to a .218 average.

In addition, he pitched the only complete game shutout in the entire Gulf Coast League.

He won the Dodgers' June award as pitcher of the month for the Gulf Coast Dodgers, working 10 scoreless innings over two starts and allowing only five hits.

He'll be a tender 20 years old in 2009 and the Dodgers can either keep him in their Arizona Rookie League or promote him to Ogden. His two-year record:
