Dodgers Sign Lefty Shawn Estes

The Dodgers have had success resurrecting the career of pitchers seemingly over the hill, including Rudy Seanez and Chan Ho Park, and their latest venture seems to be 35-year-old lefthander Shawn Estes, who has pitched for seven teams over his 13-year major league career.

General Manager Ned Colletti, after announcing the signing of 15 free agents to Minor League contracts the day before, again dipped into the San Francisco talent pool to give Estes a chance, inviting him to spring training.

He will get $550,000 if he makes the team in spring training, with various incentive bonuses for games started. If he starts 30 games, he would make the maximum $1 million in bonuses.

Estes has pitched for seven teams, including the Giants, Rockies, Diamondbacks and Padres. If he makes the Dodgers roster, the left-hander will have pitched for all five National League West teams in his career.

Estes pitched with the Padres last season, going 2-3 with a 4.74 ERA (very near his career ERA mark of 4.71) in eight starts and one relief appearance.

Jon Weisman, on his "Dodgers Thoughts" blog, wrote, "The Dodgers have signed Shawn Estes to a minor league contract. Scott Erickson, you've been replaced."

In his career, he is 101-93 with a 4.71 ERA in 281 starts. His best season came in 1997 with the Giants when he went 19-5 and was named an All-Star.
