Kuroda Sparkles as Dodgers Top Arizona

The Dodgers struck early off Arizona ace Brandon Webb and then relied on stiff pitching to drop the Diamondbacks 5-3. The Los Angeles staff punched out an even dozen hitters, with Hiroki Kuroda striking out five of the first six he faced. Casey Blake and Matt Kemp provided home runs as L.A. moved to 7-6 on the spring season.

Kuroda allowed only one hit before leaving the game with two out in the fourth inning. He has thrown 8.2 shutout innings this spring and is on the short list (along with Chad Billingsley and his 1.29 ERA) for the opening day starting spot.

Shortstop Rafael Furcal walked and moved to third on a perfect hit and run base hit by second baseman Orlando Hudson. First baseman James Loney's line single made to 2-0 after one.

Third baseman Casey Blake completed the infield rampage with his first home run of the spring in the third inning.

Stephen Randolph got the third out for Kuroda in the fourth inning.

Former Dodger Tony Clark doubled and Miguel Montero singled him home off Jeff Weaver in the fifth inning for the Diamondbacks first run. D

Loney singled in the bottom of the inning and Matt Kemp banged his second homer of the season to dead center field to give the Dodgers a 5-1 lead.

Guillermo Mota allowed only a single in the sixth and Tanyon Sturtze pitched a shutout seventh. Brad Ausmus had two hits. Juan Pierre tripled and Danny Ardoin doubled him home in the eighth for the sixth, and final, Los Angeles run.

Evan Frey tripled and scored on Brandon Watson's sacrifice fly in the eighth off Eric Stults and Nick DeBarr served up a home run in the ninth but earned the save.

In the battle of the catchers, Brad Ausmus (.438) went 2 for 3 with a double. Danny Ardoin (.750) doubled in his only at-bat. Loney and Kemp also had a pair of hits

The Dodgers are off tomorrow (Wednesday) before the exhibition debut of Manny Ramirez in a game against World Baseball Classic Team Korea. Manny may operate as the designated hitter.

LHP Randy Wolf draws the start and will be followed by RHP James McDonald and RHP Ramon Troncoso, who came is returning on two days rest after pitching two innings in a "B" game.

He said he was scheduled for an MRI. ...Infielder Tony Abreu's career has been again been sidetracked by injuries and it is expected he will open the season at Triple-A Albuquerque. Still in line for utility infield roles are Mark Loretta, Blake DeWitt, Juan Castro and Doug Mientkievicz.
