L.A. Starting Strength Bunches in Lower Level

Dodgers starting pitching, with some notable exceptions, is pretty much still in the lower levels of the franchise. Potential is the operative word for the very young ones.

When analyzing pitching performances, it is well to overlook the won-lost record, check the earned run average (which should be below 4.00), hits should be fewer than innings pitched and strikeouts should be twice (or better) than the number of walks.

At Las Vegas, Jason Johnson, who won 11 games, had a 3.82 ERA and veteran Eric Stults also had a 3.82 ERA. Heath Totten, back in the system for another season won eight of 13 decisions.

Clayton Kershaw aced the league at Jacksonville (1.91 ERA, ,179 average allowed), and James McDonald had a fine season, winning five of eight decisions, had a 3.19 ERA, struck out 113 and walked only 46. Both will stick with the big club this year.

Jesus Castillo won seven with a 3.24 earned run average.

Promoted from Great Lakes to Inland Empire Victor Garate won three straight and struck out 47 in 38 innings. Jesus Rodriguez was solid with the 66ers but stumbled when moved up a notch.

Cody White had a nice season at San Bernardino (6-3, 3.28) but had trouble when he moved up to Double-A.

Ogden had strong performances from Garate (6-3, 1.85), Josh Lindblom (0-0, 1.86 - added just for reference) and Steve Johnson, who went 9-2 with a 2.34 ERA before moving up to Inland Empire.

Geison Aguasviva topped the Ogden staff with a 2.90 ERA and 60 strikeouts against 13 walks over 71 innings. Michael Watt led the league, along with Jonathan Dutton, with nine wins.

The Gulf Coast and Dominican Dodgers are rife with hard-throwing youngsters who tend to overpower the hitters at this level. It is easier to teach a power pitcher than it is to prepare a batter for 96 mph heaters at this age.

Five of the eight pitchers at this level with eight or more starts had earned run averages under 3.00 and two of them were under 2.00. Led by Antonio Castillo (1.18), Rubby De La Rosa (1.71), Edwin Contreras (2.30), Elisaul Pimentel (2.41) and Eduardo Perez (2.91) are on the "to watch" list.

All full-season pitchers with 10 or more starts and short-season hurlers with eight or more:
