Kemp has three hits, including a home run

The Dodgers scored three runs after being held to a single run in the two previous games and hopefully they are building up to the regular season. Jason Schmidt started and was hit hard, as were Tanyon Sturtze and Erick Threets.

Jason Schmidt struck out three of the first six Padres he faced but allowed three doubles and three runs before leaving after throwing 51 pitches with one out in the fourth.

"I don't think I've really let one go outside of the bullpen yet," said Schmidt, who hasn't pitched in the majors since June 2007 because of major shoulder surgery. "I think I was 90 percent in the first inning and probably about 85 after that because I was wild and I had to take a little off to get it over. It is a positive step, but I realize I need a lot of work. I need to have better command and go from there."

Manny Ramirez hit his first double of the spring in the first and Matt Kemp slugged his fourth home run, a two-run blast in the fourth inning. He also had a pair of singles and made a sparkling catch in center field.

Kemp told Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, "Things are way more clear, I'm picking up the ball way quicker."

Kemp's new contact lenses seem to have made all the difference.

"My vision had been a little blurry, like there were halos where there were lights," he told Gurnick. "These lenses corrected that. And it helps me batting because I can stay back longer because I'm picking up the ball earlier. So now I'm laying off pitches I used to swing at, I'm seeing the rotation of the ball instead of letting it get on me and I'm picking it up out of the pitcher's hand."

Orlando Hudson had two singles and Russell Martin was 1-for-1.

Ramon Troncoso had a 1-2-3 innings, getting three ground balls with his sinker. It was his fourth scoreless outing in his last five.

And the Wounderkinder, 21-year-old rookie Josh Lindblom, pitched two more scoreless innings and has now allowed two runs in nine innings.

Torre is obviously delighted with his performance and said he would put him in the category of Clayton Kershaw. "Lindblom will go west with us and get another chance to pitch."

The Dodgers dropped to 13-17 with the loss and left-hander Clayton Kershaw, coming off his two most impressive starts of the spring, starts for the Dodgers against Oakland. The Dodgers are scheduled to use their anticipated Opening Day lineup, including left fielder Manny Ramirez. Jeff Weaver is expected to pitch two innings.

Billingsley Throwing Freely
Chad Billingsley brightened a number of faces at Camelback Ranch by throwing a 65-pitch bullpen under the watchful eye of pitching coach Rick Honeycutt.

He reported there was no problem with his sore right groin that has sidelined him for a week.

"It felt really good," Billingsley said. "I wanted to throw 80 pitched and Rick [Honeycutt] wanted me to throw 45 so we compromised and split the difference.

Billingsley's final test before the regular season opens will be against Milwaukee in Dodger Stadium next weekend.

Ohman Throws for Torre
Will Ohman, a free agent who pitched in 83 games last year for the Braves and had a 3.68 earned run average, threw a simulated game for GM Ned Colletti and manager Joe Torre.

Torre expressed his interest and said Colletti is working with Ohman's agent to see if something could be worked out.

"He's been throwing," Torre said. "It's tough to show up this late in spring training and say you are ready, but he did show me he's been throwing."

Torre also said that OF Delwyn Young will probably start the season on the disabled list and that he had has a cortisone shot in his ailing elbow. And the Dodgers released RHP Edgar Martinez, a free agent they signed out of the Red Sox organization.
