Belisario Decision Goes Down to the Wire

It's the stuff that movies are made of. Young pitcher signs at age 16, battles through the minor leagues until two clubs finally give up on him. Is noticed in Latin league, signed, but has visa problems and arrives late to spring training. However, when given a chance impresses his new club and is now, improbably, fighting for a chance to open the season in The Show. Cut. That's a wrap.

That's a Cliff's Notes synopsis of Ronal Belasario's career. He signed with Florida at 16. Missed the 2005 and 2006 season's with arm trouble, was released and signed by Pittsburgh. They also released him and he has never pitched above Double-A.

Still only 26, he was pitching in the Venezuelan Winter League this year for Leones de Caracas when he impressed his manager Carlos Subera, the new manager of the Dodgers high Single-A Inland Empire affiliate.

The Dodgers signed him on Subera's recommendation but visa problems delayed him so long he was sent to the minor league side at Camelback Ranch when he finally arrived.

"He was dismissed very quickly because he was so late," Torre said. "He missed the flight plan, and we had other guys to look at. We didn't have room to get what he needed. He went to the minor leagues.

"Then we had a had meeting in Arizona and we wanted to look at a couple of players. We watched him warm up. We've seen his ability to throw strikes in a couple of appearances."

Then he got a chance against the Angeles and really opened some eyes.

"I watched Chone Figgins swing and miss twice. That doesn't happen very much when he's looking for fastballs to hit. That was impressive … what that means is there's late life on the fastball."

He has made four relief appearances and has yet to allow an earned run. Over his six innings he has allowed four hits and struck out six.

The young man has great stuff and if he makes the team, he'll be the biggest surprise of the spring.
