Dodgers Receive Pitcher for DY Young

The Dodgers received right-handed reliever Eric Krebs from the Pittsburgh Pirates to complete the April 14 trade for Delwyn Young. The 24-year-old Krebs, a 14th-round pick in 2005, was assigned to Chattanooga. At Altoona, the hard-throwing-but-wild Krebs was 2-4 with a 4.10 ERA and in 16.2 innings had 15 strikeouts but 17 walks.

Taken in the 36th round in 2004 by the Royals, Krebs didn't sign.  He throws 93-94, with a mid-80s cutter or slider. The Pirates signed him in mid-July 2005. In Junior College he was a reliever, but but Pittsburgh used him in the starting rotation to get him more innings.

Scouts are enthusiastic about his arm, but he has had control problems everywhere he has pitched, generally walking more that he struck out and allowing too many hits.

He was moved up to the Gulf Coast League in 2006 and didn't do well so he was, but moved up to Low A Williamsport and while his control still wasn't good, he had struck out 14 and walked 11. He dominated right-handed batters, allowing a .197 average but lefties nailed him for a .283 average.

He opened as a starter in 2007 at Hickory, and struggled again, finally going on the disabled list. Some scouts feel that arm troubles had been part of his early problems.

When he returned July from rehabbing in the GCL, the Pirates moved him into the bullpen hoping he would stay healthy. He struck out 11.57 per nine innings and his strikeout-walk ratio was 48-22.

His best season was at Lynchburg in 2008, where he was 4-2 with a 4.58 earned run average and 60 strikeouts and "only" 29 walks. However, he was hit on the head by a line drive and missed an entire month. When he returned he was terrible but then snapped out of it and over the rest of the season he dropped his ERA to 2.57.

While he was eligible for the Rule V draft, but he had no takers.

The Pirates sent him to AA Altoona in 2009 and over 10 games he was 2-4 with a 4.96 earned run average, allowing 11 hits and striking out 15 in 16.2 innings, but walking 11.

Apparently tired of waiting for him to reach the potentially they had expected, they sent him to the Dodgers and now it is there turn to see if they can control the wild but talented 24-year-old.
