Dodgers Continued to Lead in Runs Created

Los Angeles is creating more runs than any other National League team and their pitching staff is fifth in the league, thus giving them a remarkable balance that accounts for their Major League-leading won-lost mark.

The Dodgers top the National League in Runs Created Above Average (RSAA) with 56 total points, with the Washington Nationals (36) and Phillies (35) in second and third. In he National League West, the Padres are tied for 8th (-9), Rockies are 12th (-12), Diamondbacks 15th (-28) and Giants 16th (-47).

Manny Ramirez (t5th), although he has missed 17 games, and Orlando Hudson (8th) rank in the National League top 10 on the Runs Scored above average list. The top five include Juan Pierre (11), Casey Blake (9), Matt Kemp (5) and Juan Castor (4).

Runs Created Was invented by Bill James and is an excellent measure of the number of runs a batter truly contributed to his team's offense. The basic formula for RC is OBPxTB, but it has evolved into over fourteen different versions.

Runs Created Above Average is a hitting stat invented and tracked by Lee Sinins, the author of the Sabermetric Baseball Encyclopedia. Lee calculates each player's Runs Created, and then compares it to the league average, given that player's number of plate appearances. Lee uses a different version of RC than we do, though the two are very similar.

Team leaders are listed for all National League teams as well as those over a +4. Former Dodgers players are displayed in brackets.

PITCHING
In the pitching department, Chad Billingsley is the only Dodger in the top 10, with the staff ranking fifth. Cincinnati (26), St. Louis (22), New York (21) and Giants (20) make up the top four.

Individually, Jonathan Broxton, Randy Wolf and Ramon Troncoso are second on the Los Angeles list behind Billingsley.

Runs Saved Above Average. This pitching stat, which is also tracked and reported by Lee Sinins, is a measure of a pitcher's effectiveness and contribution. The formula is RA/IP minus league-average RA/IP, times total innings pitched.
