Short Season Teams Take Two of Three

Ogden dropped their opener to Orem 7-3 despite three hits by Clay Calfee. The Arizona Dodgers used strong pitching to top the Padres 5-0, with Carlos Frias working five innings to earn the win. The Dominican Dodgers pounded out 13 hits en route to a 11-4 win over the Yankees1. With starter Jose Dominguez (1-1) worked five shutout innings.

Orem Spoils Ogden Debut
Ogden dropped their opener to Orem 7-3 when the Owlz scored three runs in each the fourth and sixth innings to give them a 6-1 margin. Starter Antonio Castillo (0-1) was tagged for three hits and issued five walks that resulted in three runs over his four innings and took the loss.

Chris Jacobs collected the first Raptors hit of the season with a single in the second. Jerry Sands smacked a solo home run in the fourth and the Dodgers fifth selection in the 2009 draft, Mario Songco homered (#1), with Brian Cavazos-Galvez (#13) on base in the eighth.

Eric Thompson took over for Castillo in the fifth and was tagged for three runs. Javier Solano allowed the final run and Andy Suiter (#11) finished up with a shutout ninth inning.

Sands had a pair of singles to go with his home run and was the only Raptor with more than a single hit.

Arizona Dodgers Take 5-0 Opener
Strong pitching in not only the league opener but the opening game for the Dodgers in their new home gave them a 5-0 win over the Padres. Brian Akin, Carlos Frias and Roberto Feliciano held the Padres to three hits while striking out 11.

Akin worked only a single inning and pitched around three walks before handing the ball to Frias (1-0) who allowed all three Padres hits in his five innings but struck out four. Feliciano collected the save with three perfect innings and recorded six strikeouts.

The Dodgers jumped into the scoring column in the first inning. With two out, Nick Adkins and Clay Calfee doubled for one run and Johan Garcia singled in the other.

They added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Calfee doubled and scored on Brian Ruggiano's sac fly in the sixth; Michael Pericht (#17 pick in the 2009 draft) singled home Austin King (32) who had reached on an error in the seventh and Calfee rapped out his third hit of the game and scored on Pedro Tavarez's single in the eighth.

The Dodgers out-hit the Padres 11-3, and Calfee led the way with three, including a pair of doubles. Akins and Tavarez each had a pair,

DSL Dodgers Smack Yankees 11-4
The Dominican Dodgers got back on the winning side of the ledger by pounded out 13 hits en route to a 11-4 win over the Yankees1. Starter Jose Dominguez (1-1) worked five shutout innings and allowed a pair of runs while striking out six.

Luis Mesa, Jose Garcia and Yimi Garcia finished the game out.

The Dodgers collected their runs in gobs -- four in the third and three in each the fifth and sixth innings. The Yankees helped out by making eight errors.

Ronny Lugo doubled and homered, knocking in four runs. Wilner Charles and Enily Morales, who boosted his average to .397, had a pair of hits as did Abdul Nieto, who added three runs batted in of his own. Bladimir Franco chipped in with his sixth home run of the season.
