Contreras Helps Ogden Walks Past Casper 5-3

Ogden walked to their third win in a row over Casper, behind the strong pitching of Edwin Contreras and using eight walks and six hits to record a 5-3 win over the Ghosts. Luis Mesa, Joel Lima, Arismendy Ozoria and Florencio Bustillos pitched the Dominican Dodgers to a 4-2 victory over the Marlins.

Raptors Rumble to a 5-3 Win
Ogden won their third game in a row over Casper behind the strong pitching of Edwin Contreras and demonstrating that they didn't need a home run by making judicious use of six hits, eight walks and an error to record a 5-3 win over the Ghosts.

Although out-hit 10-6, they got gutty pitching from Contreras, Eric Thompson, Javier Solano and Steve Ames, stranding nine runners and holding Casper to a 1-for-11 record with runners in scoring position.

Contreras, a 20-year-old Dominican in his first season pitching in Ogden, earned his third win without a loss, giving up four hits and a single run over five innings and lowering is ERA to 2.73.

Thompson surrendered a pair of runs in the sixth but Solano stopped the bleeding and Ames nailed things down in the eighth and ninth, striking our four, for his third save.

Contreras was 8-1, 2.66 for the Dodgers entry in the Gulf Coast League in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 he ranked fourth in the GCL with a 2.30 earned run average, allowed more than three runs in only one of his nine starts and held the opposition to a .199 average.

The win moves the Raptors into a near-tie for first place in the Pioneer League Southern Division, trailing Idaho Falls by percentage points. The Chukars arrive at Lindquist Field tonight in a three-game series to battle it out for the league lead. The two teams meet six times in the final nine days of the first half.

A four-run second inning, given a boost by five walks, two with the bases loaded, gave Ogden all the runs they would need.

Gorman Erickson opened the inning with a double before Jeremy Wise, Chris Jacobs, Rafael Ynoa, Lennell McGee and Austin walked and Brian Cavazos-Galvez smacked a sac fly to account for the four runs.

Cavazos-Galvez walked in the fifth, stole second and scored on Erickson's single to close out the Ogden scoring. Casper added two in the sixth but the bullpen held them off the rest of the way.
