Ogden Needs One Win to Clinch Playoffs

Ogden moved ever closer to clinching a playoff spot in the Pioneer League when they split a doubleheader with Casper. The Arizona Dodgers lost 5-2 to the Rangers and the Dominican Dodgers topped the Cubs 2-1 in 10 innings.

Ogden Splits With Casper
Ogden won the first game of a double header in Casper, then took a 4-1 lead into the seventh only to lose 5-4 in the second game. The Raptors now travel to Idaho Falls for a three-game series with the second place Chukars.

Despite the disappointing loss in the second game, Ogden would still have had to win one game in the final series to clinch the first half title. A sweep by the Chukars is the only way they will be able to shoulder past the Raptors into first place. The standings with three to go:

First game Ogden rolled to a 5-0 win over Casper in the first game behind behind the shutout pitching Edwin Contreras (4-0), who worked six innings and scattered seven hit while lowering his ERA to 2.27.

The Raptors scored four times in the first when Brian Ruggiano singled and Austin Yount walked to open the inning. With one out, Jerry Sands doubled in the only run Contreras would need. With two out, a costly error on a Chris Jacobs ground ball allowed two runs and allowed Blake Smith the opportunity to single in Jacobs with the fourth run.

Ogden added their final run in the fifth when Brian Ruggiano tripled and scored on a wild pitch.

Contreras allowed a pair of singles to open the ninth and Nick Gaudi took over and retire the final three Ghosts to sew up the win.

Second game
Ogden took a solid, 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth only to see the Ghosts, who had been held to four hits, use an error by shortstop Pedro Guerrero, two walks a triple and a walk-off single for a mircile comeback.

The Raptors again cranked out a 4-0 lead going into the last of the fourth inning. A two-base error on Chris Jacobs' ground ball and an RBI single by Kyle Orr recorded the first run in the second.

Jerry Sands' launched his 12th home run to lead off the fourth. An error, a walk and a pair of ground balls accounted for the second run and David Iden's RBI single made it 4-0.

Luis Vasquez gave up only three hits and a single run over his four innings and Greg Wilborn added two more perfect frames to take the 4-1 lead into the final inning. Casper left the bases loaded n the fourth and fifth but Ogden escaped after allowing only one run.

Daigoro Rondon (1-3) came in to close the game out but didn't retire any of the five Casper batters he faced.

Ogden pitching allowed five hits and nine walks during the loss.

AZ Dodgers Topped by the Mariners
The Arizona Dodgers were held to five his in a 5-2 loss o the Mariners, snapping a two-game winning streak.

Casio Grider singled in the first inning and stole second Pedro Tavarez's RBI single gave the Dodgers a brief 1-0 lead.

Brian Akin allowed a first inning run to tie the game before Carlos Frias took over and allowed three runs in the second, two of them earned, before settling in and working three scoreless innings. Bekyer Fructuoso allowed one more run over the final three innings.

Melvin Ray singled to lead off he sixth and stole second base. He scored on Stetson Banks' single to right field, closing the scoring.

Tavarez had two of the Dodgers five hits.

DSL Dodgers win in 10
The Dominican Dodgers and Cubs 2 tangled in a pitcher's battle that saw the Dodgers score the first run of the game in the eighth inning, only to have the Cubs tie it in the ninth. A wild pitch allowed the winning run to score in the 10th.

Luis Mesa started and allowed three hits over the first ix innings, Joel Lima added two more zeros before Florencio Bustillos came in and worked a scoreless eighth.

The Dodgers broke through in the bottom of the inning when Wilner Charles opened with a single and moved to second on a bunt, then to third on a wild pitch. Ronny Lugo singled him in to break the tie.

Bustillos (3-2) served up a solo home run in the ninth to re-knot the score and the game moved into the last of the 10th.

Charles again sparked the rally with a single and was again bunted to second by Faustino Oguisten. Charles moved to third on Lugo's fly ball and then scored on a wild pitch.
