Ogden and Arizona Dodgers Nailed With a Loss

Ogden built a 6-0 lead over Northern Division leader Missoula then saw the Osprey rally to take an 8-7 decision. The Arizona League Cubs knocked out the Dodgers starter in the second and scored all 10 of their runs in the first five innings to clam a 10-4 win.

Ogden Squanders Six Run Lead
Ogden saw a 6-0 lead over Northern Division leader Missoula and slid into third place in the Southern Division with the 8-7 loss.

The Osprey were generous enough to commit three errors in the first inning, helping the Raptors to a 4-0 lead, which became 6-0 by the top of the third. From that point on, Missoula ran up an 8-1 advantage to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Ogden starter Luis Vasquez gave up a grand slam Vasquez in the bottom of the third, his second this season, and escaped another bases loaded jam before Greg Wilborn came in to end the inning. Luis Ferreras allowed the Osprey a single run in the fourth and fifth before Fredy Quintero (0-2), with the help of a big error in the sixth that resulted in two unearned runs, allowed the lead run in the eight and took the loss.

Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Blake Smith had RBI hits in the first inning, and mixed in with three errors they gave Ogden a 4-0 margin right out of the box. Gorman Erickson doubled in a run in the second and Chris Jacobs tripled and scored on Brian Ruggiano's double to run the tab to 6-0, Raptors.

The grand slam changed everything. Ogden increased the lead to 7-4 in the sixth when Ruggiano doubled and scored on Galvez's single but Missoula pounded a run across in the sixth.

Shortstop Bryant Hernandez's error opened the seventh and after a walk, ad a failed sacrifice bunt, Quintero threw to third base to catch the runners in a double-steal attempt. Ruggiano tagged the runner but his throw to second didn't catch the second runner.

However, the base umpire ruled that Ruggiano had missed the tag, that the runner had stayed within the baseline and both runners were safe at second and third. Ogden manager Damon Berryhill came out to argue the call and was ejected for the fourth time in twelve games. A walk and a wild pitch scored one run and the tying run came across on a ground ball.

In the last of the eighth, a rare sacrifice fly double play allowed the lead run to score. After a wild pitch strikeout that allowed the batter to reach first, a single and a hit-by-pitch, center fielder Lenell McGee rifled a throw to first baseman Chris Jacobs to nip the runner attempting to get back but the lead run scored on the fly.

Ogden is now 29-21 through 50 games, and two games under .500 in the second half at 5-7. The Raptors wrap up their season-high-tying seven-game road trip tonight against the Osprey, as righty Brett Wallach battles Enrique Burgos.
