Ogden Ends Season With a Win

Ogden broke a five-game losing streak by topping Orem 8-4 to end the regular season. Brian Ruggiano had one hit but lost the batting title to Orem's Dillon Baird .372-.371.

The Ogden Raptors blasted three home runs and broke a season-long five-game losing streak in an 8-4 win over the Orem Owlz. Ogden tied a franchise record with its forty-second victory. The two teams meet tonight in the first round of the Pioneer League playoffs.

Starter Garrett Gould, the Dodgers #3 selection choice in the 2009 draft, struck out the side in the top of the first and Brian Ruggiano led off the bottom half with a solo home run, his ninth of the season.

Ruggiano's homer boosted his average to .378, but would be his only hit of the night in five trips. He led Orem's Dillon Baird by three points coming into the game, but Baird overtook him with a single in the eighth inning, finished 2-for-5, and won the title.

Ogden tie the league-record for home runs (89) after Clay Calfee smacked a two-run shot to right-center (3#) and Pedro Guerrero added a two-run homer of his own (#4), tying a league mark set by the 2008 Ogden team.

Elisaul Pimentel (4-4) took over in the second inning and earned the win for Ogden, tossing four innings and allowing two runs. He was followed by Ji Mo Lee, Fredy Quintero and J.B. Paxson.

Paxson pitched out of a bases-loaded mess in the ninth, helped along by Guerrero third error of the game but he got Baird to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and the regular.

League MVP Brian Cavazos-Galvez went 0-3, failing to hit what would have been league-record thirtieth double. His eighteen home runs tied for most in the league.

The Raptors and Owlz begin a best-of-three post-season series tonight in Orem. Allen Webster will battle left-hander Stephen Locke in the opener. Game Two and Game Three, if necessary will be in Ogden Sunday and Monday night.
