L.A. Tops Pittsburgh; Leads by Four

Jon Garland won his second game, Andre Ethier slugged his 29th home run and Orlando Hudson broke out of his slump with three hits as the Dodgers topped Pittsburgh 6-2 and picked up a game on Colorado, who lost to San Francisco. The magic number, although no one is talking about it, dipped to 11.

Garland, 10-11 overall but is 2-0 in Dodger Blue, allowed both Pittsburgh runs on six hits over his six-inning start. Relievers Hong-Chih Kuo, George Sherrill and Jonathan Broxton each pitched a perfect inning, and the four pitchers retired the last 14 Pirates.

At the same time, Tim Lincecum was shutting down Colorado 9-1 to keep the Giants hopes alive. The Rockies trail the Dodgers by four, San Francisco is now four games behind them in the loss column.

The Dodgers have 17 games remaining and nine of them are against last-place teams -- six with Pittsburgh, three with Washington.

The Pirates have lost 15 of 17 as the Dodgers (86-59) got hits from all eight starting position players to move back to a season-high 27 games over .500 with their fifth victory in seven games.

Rafael Furcal singled and stole second, scoring the first Dodgers run on Manny Ramirez bloop double into left field after Garland worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the inning.

He gave up a single and a double that tied the game in the fourth before the Dodgers loaded the bases when James Loney walked, Casey Blake was hit by a pitch and Russ Martin single. Hudson bounced into a double play and L.A. took a 2-1 lead.

Pittsburgh again tied the game in the fifth after a double and a ground ball scored former Dodger Andy LaRoche, who had singled.

Matt Kemp singled and stole second before Ethier made it 4-2 with his 29th homer off rookie Dan McCutchen, and Hudson drove in Blake, who had singled, with a long RBI double in the sixth. Hudson knocked in Blake, who reached base four times, in the eighth.

Hudson had only one RBI in his previous 20 games and has been sharing playing time recently with Ronnie Belliard.

Ethier collected his 96th to go with his 29 homers and has 17 games to record the first 30 HR/100 RBI season for a Dodgers outfielder since Shawn Green in 2002.

Garland had to battle in third start since joining the Dodgers in a trade with Arizona on Aug. 31. He never retiring the side in order until the sixth.

"It was definitely a grind out there," Garland said. "As long as we keep playing good baseball, things are going to work out. The speed, the power, the ability to get on the basepaths—it's great to play with these guys."

Randy Wolf returns to the mound tonight against the Pirates for his first start in 10 days since he hyperextended his left elbow.

Wolf hasn't lost a decision since Aug. 1 and has a 5-0 record with a 2.52 ERA during that stretch. He is on a five-game winning streak with quality starts in 13 of his past 14 outings. His .228 opponents batting average is seventh-lowest in the league and he's 7-1 lifetime against the Pirates.

Pittsburgh counters with LHP Zach Duke (10-14, 4.02 ERA) who is 1-3 with a 7.53 ERA in six career starts against the Dodgers.
