Dodger Prospect #37 - RHP Tim Sexton

Tim Sexton, plagued by 23 unearned runs that resulted in an 8-14 won-lost record, pitched very well for Inland Empire and finished with a 3.95 earned run over 27 games and 157 innings. He was a workhorse for the 66ers, tying for the team lead with 22 starts. He is Prospect #37.

He was picked by the Dodgers in the 25th round choice out of Miami-Dade City College South but didn't sign until the middle of August, when he received a $123,000 bonus, which is sixth round money. He went late in the draft because because of concerns about his signability and both his talent and his rookie season performance made it obvious that he was more than a 25th round pick.

Sexton made his professional debut on August 13 for Great Lakes and pitched a scoreless, five-inning relief stint in which he struck out six and didn't issue a walk.

Due to his late signing, he worked in only five games but finished August 3-0, 1.89 and only a rough final start dropped him to 3-1, 3.57. He allowed only five walks and struck out 25 in 22.2 innings and was rewarded with an invitation to the Arizona Instructional League following the season.

He struggled in 2008 with Inland Empire, going 5-12 with a 6.04 earned run average over 26 starts, then had little luck in San Bernardino in 2009, when he was 8-4, 3.95.

He took a 3.26 earned run average into the final 10 games of a disappointing season and was hit hard, allowing 33 runs over his final 57.2 innings and recording a 5.15 ERA. That elevated his ERA to nearly four per game.

Sexton has a four-pitch repertoire but depends on a goo sinker and a deceptive delivery. He has excellent control but gives up too many home runs. He will be 23 in 2010 and his performance at Double-A Chattanooga may determine his future.
