Dodgers Led N.L. in Relief Pitching

The Dodgers led the National League in relief pitching for the first time since 2003, posting a 3.14 mark. They had a 37-23 won-lost record, 44 saves, in 553 innings pitched they 466 hits, 193 earned runs, 45 homers, 231 walks and 501 strikeouts

. The 2003 pen posted a 2.46 ERA and finished second in 2004 with a 3.01, losing the title when they gave up 10 runs on the final day of the season to the Giants. They were also second in 2008, edged only by the Phillies 3.24-3.34.

Jonathan Broxton, Ron Belisario and Ramon Troncoso engraved their names on the exclusive LADugout all time relief charts. James McDonald missed the required number of innings to be considered on the charts.

Broxton is now second in strikeouts per nine innings (13.50) only to Eric Gagné's 14.98 accomplished in the 2003 season. Broxton is third in opponents batting average (.165), tied for fourth with 114 strikeouts and tied for fifth after allowing only 5.21 hits per nine innings

Belisario, only a rookie in 2009, put his name in 11th place by allowing opponents a .201 average and Troncoso is 17th after pitching 73 games.

Eric Gagné was nearly flawless for three seasons. 2002-2004. And and he is included in almost every department, leading in saves (55), earned run average (1.20), opponents batting average (.133), hits per nine innings (4.04)and strikeouts per game (14.98), all in 2003.

When Gagné became a free agent, Takashi Saito responded in a manner that converted even his detractors in the front office who had opposed even signing him. He is second only to Gagne on a number of charts and Jonathan Broxton is now moving in to earn his share of the listings.
