Dodgers Sign Free Agent OF Reed Johnson

Sources say the Dodgers have signed former Cubs outfielder Reed Johnson. The deal depends only on Johnson passing a physical. He will apparently back up Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp and/or Andre Ether.

Johnson reportedly did not re-sign with the Cubs because he was looking for a starting job. Apparently was willing to change his mind for the Dodgers and the fact he is a native Californian probably had something to do with it.

Over his career he has led the league in one department, hit by pitch (21), which happened in 2006. During is career he has been hit 98 times and has been in the top 10 in six of his eight seasons.

No salary was announced but he made $3 million last season in Chicago.

It also will mean the loss of Jason Repko, who is out of options, and Xavier Paul, who is not but will undoubtedly open the season Albuquerque.

Johnson missed two months while with the Cubs last season after breaking a bone when he fouled a ball off his foot against Houston's Mike Hampton on July 29, but Johnson returned for the final two weeks of the season.

Johnson hit .255 last season, with four homers and 22 RBIs. He is a career .282 hitter in seven big-league seasons and was primarily a backup the past two years with the Cubs.

Johnson has appeared in more than 100 games in his career at each of the three outfield spots, a fact that will come in handy in an outfield where he might be the only backup.

Reed, 34, was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 17th round of the 1999 amateur draft. He was released by the Jays on March 23, 2008 and signed with the Cubs two days later.
