Dodgers Sign 37-Year-Old Ramon Ortiz

The Dodgers, who are pretty much finished dealing according to GM Ned Colletti "with the exception of adding a few more minor league pitchers" have signed another one and invited him to spring training. Dodger fans should be aware that they now have both a Ramon and a Russ Ortiz on the spring training roster.

Ramon Ortiz, 37, and who hasn't pitched in the Major Leagues since 2007, will compete for a spot in the bullpen but in all probably will end up as insurance at the Albuquerque.

Other non-roster invitees include pitchers Josh Lindstrom, Francisco Felix, Justin Miller, Luis Ayala, Scott Dohmann, Russ Ortiz, Juan Perez and Josh Towers. Infielders: Angel Berroa, Russell Mitchell, Nick Green, John Lindsey, Doug Mientkiewicz, Alfredo Amezaga and Argenis Reyes. Outfielders: Prentice Redman and Michael Retovich.

Ortiz spent last season pitching in Triple-A with San Francisco's Fresno affiliate, going 5-6 with a 3.05 ERA, making 16 starts and 19 relief appearances. He spent the 2008 season pitching for the Orix Buffaloes of the Japanese Pacific League, going 4-7 with a 5.82 ERA in 17 starts.

Ortiz last pitched in the majors for Colorado after being traded there by Minnesota midway through the 2007 season. Ortiz was a combined 5-4 with a 5.45 ERA for the Twins and Rockies that year and finished the season working exclusively out of the bullpen.

Ortiz is a 10-year veteran who spent his first six seasons with the Angels, going a combined 44-33 (13, 15 and 16) in a three-year stretch from 2001 to 2003. He also spent a season each with Cincinnati and Washington.

Ortiz was signed by the Angels as a amateur free agent in 1995. He was traded to Cincinnati for Dustin Moseley in 2004. Cincinnati released him in 2005 and Washington signed him in 2007. He was traded to Colorado in August of 2007 and released at the end of the season.
