Dodgers Sign OF Brian Giles

The Dodgers have signed Brian Giles (39) to a minor league contract and have invited hi to spring training. Giles, despite his age, brings a gaudy set of statistics and a left-handed bat, something the bench has been lacking.

Giles played in 61 games for the Padres in 2009, spending the latter part of the season on the disabled list with an arthritic right knee. He hit .191 with two home runs and 23 RBIs in 225 at-bats, his lowest batting average in his 15 seasons inn the major leagues.

Giles, who had mircrofracture surgery on his right knee in 2007, averaged 37 home runs and 109 RBIs between 1999 and 2003, making the National League All-Star team with the Pirates in 2000 and 2001.

Reed Johnson may have the inside track as the fourth outfielder, but Giles will provide competition for the fifth outfield/pinch-hitting slot with Doug Mientkiewicz as a left-handed bat off the bench.

If Giles makes the Dodgers, he will earn $550,000 in major league salary, with another $200,000 in possible performance bonuses according to sources. If he doesn't make the team at the end of spring training, he can ask for his release.

He has played in 29 post-season games over eight different seasons.

Over his 15 seasons in the Major Leagues he was a two-time all-star, ninth in the 2005 MVP voting, eighth in batting average (.306, 2008), in the top 10 in on-base percentage seven times, three times in slugging, five times in on-base plus slugging, three times in games played, twice in runs scored, twice in home runs, twice in runs batted in, seven times in bases on balls (first in 2005), five times in runs created and three times in extra base hits.

He was drafted by Cleveland in the 17th round of the 1989 draft. He was traded after the 1998 season to Pittsburgh for THP Ricardo Rincon. In late August, 2003 he was traded to Pittsburgh for Jason Bay and RHP Oliver Perez. Granted free agency after the 2005 season, signed by San Diego in December. Granted free agency in 2009.
