Dodgers Sign One After Open Tryouts

CAMELBACK RANCH: The Scouting and Player Development department hosted its annual open tryout and RHP Ricardo "Ricky" Rivas was awarded a minor league contract from the 85 hopefuls who tried in front Tommy Lasorda, Assistant GM, Scouting Logan White, Assistant GM, Player Development De Jon Watson, Special Assistant to the GM Toney Howell and Director, Player Development Chris Haydock among others.

Rivas, 26, of El Paso, Texas, who attended Oklahoma State University and pitched for the Independent El Paso Diablos in 2009, going 2-1 with a 4.82 ERA in 23 relief appearances.

PUNK'D: It just wouldn't be Spring Training without a few practical jokes. Thursday, Vicente Padilla walked out to practice without realizing that he was sporting Ronald Belisario's #54 practice jersey. Padilla quickly covered up with a jacket upon noticing the switcheroo, which was rumored to have been orchestrated by clubhouse neighbor Ramon Troncoso. Later, Reed Johnson opened a "baserunning drill" by hustling around first base and flying into second before realizing that he was the only player participating in the drill. He tipped his cap to the Dodger coaching staff after the annual right of passage for team newcomers. Orlando Hudson fell victim to a similar fake baserunning drill last season.

KONICHIWA: The Dodgers would like to welcome Japanese Baseball Hall of Famer Tatsuro Hirooka to Camelback Ranch. Hirooka was the No. 1 pick of the Yomiuri Giants in 1954 and was selected as Rookie of the Year that season. The six-time All-Star retired after the 1967 season and won three Japan Series Championships as a manager for the Yakult Swallows and Seibu Lions.

IT'S ABOUT THAT TIME: The Cactus League slate officially kicks off tomorrow when the Dodgers play a "road" game against the Chicago White Sox. Vicente Padilla is scheduled to start the contest for the Dodgers and be followed to the mound by RHP Ramon Ortiz, RHP Charlie Haeger, RHP Luis Ayala, RHP Scott Dohmann and RHP Jon Link. The White Sox are scheduled to counter with LHP Mark Buehrle, RHP Jeff Marquez, RHP Scott Linebrink, RHP J.J. Putz, RHP Santo Luis and RHP Freddie Dolsi.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Dodgers kick off their home slate at Camelback Ranch on Saturday against the White Sox as LHP Eric Stults makes his first official start of Spring after taking the hill in today's "B" game. RHP James McDonald, RHP Eric Gagne, RHP Jeff Weaver, RHP Cory Wade, RHP Travis Schlichting and RHP Russ Ortiz are also scheduled to pitch for Los Angeles. RHP Freddy Garcia will take the hill for Chicago.
