Pagan Trade Shores Up Projected Roster

What the Giants did early in the offseason paved the way for a trade they consummated at the winter meetings, which pretty much solidified the projected roster.

Shortly after the season, the Giants re-signed relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez, assuring they have enough bullpen depth to trade reliever Ramon Ramirez. So they packaged Ramirez and outfielder Andres Torres to the Mets for Angel Pagan.

With Pagan and Melky Cabrera, obtained from Kansas City earlier in the offseason for Jonathan Sanchez, the Giants believe they're better offensively than in 2011, when they scored the fewest runs in the National League.

For now, here's the projected alignment: catcher Buster Posey, first baseman Aubrey Huff (with Brandon Belt and Brett Pill in reserve), second baseman Freddy Sanchez, shortstop Brandon Crawford, third baseman Pablo Sandoval, left fielder Cabrera, center fielder Pagan and right fielder Nate Schierholtz.

The tentative rotation has Barry Zito behind Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong.

The bullpen shakes out this way for now: closer Brian Wilson, righties Sergio Romo, Santiago Casilla and Guillermo Mota and lefties Lopez, Affeldt and Dan Runzler.

Chris Stewart is expected to be the backup catcher with Emmanuel Burriss and Mike Fontenot the utility men. Burriss, Huff and Belt could play the outfield in a pinch.
