2003 Draft Round 1-3

It's that time again. Time for the 2003 MLB Draft. Around the country, high school seniors and college students anxiously await to find out if they will have the chance to make it to the majors and what team it could possibly be with. This year the San Francisco Giants held the 22th pick. They continue to look for the young pitchers that will hopefully become the future aces.

COMMENTS: Was 5-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 2003 for the highly ranked Owls and recorded 10 saves. Saw action as both a reliever and a starter for Rice. Received WAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of February 17, 2003. Throws 92-94, with ability for more. Repertoire includes a lively mid-90s fastball, a big sweeping slider, and a knuckle-curve. Can throw the knuckle-curve for strikes. Throws with three-quarters delivery. Quick, easy arm. Late hop to fastball. Works fast, throws strikes. Had a spectacular Cape Cod League, going 3-0 with 7 saves and holding a 0.68 ERA. Named a summer all-America by Baseball America after his sterling performance at Cape Cod. May eventually become a full-time closer.

COMMENTS: Drafted out of Lufkin High School. Listed as the 12th best prepster in the draft by Baseball America. Has already signed a baseball scholarship with Texas A&M. No-hit the Longview Lobos on April 5th, 2003 while striking out 14. Tall, lanky and thin. Projectable frame with future physical gains. Quick arm. Live fastball. Tight snapping curve and feel for change. Was a preseason prep All-American in 2003. Selected to Junior National team. Pure power pitcher who can theoretically throw in the high 90s. Hit 96 in his last high school start.

COMMENTS: Athletic body. Built like John Valentin. Balanced, open stance. Loose, live arm. Above-average arm strength. Sure-handed. Line-drive hitter with occasional power. Generates good bat speed. Has not had a productive year at bat but came on late after he was moved to the leadoff position in the batting order. Aggressive player with good instincts. Started 15 games at catcher, and 22 games at third base. Has seen extensive time at second base, third base and the outfield, in addition to behind the plate. Steady, reliable player. Good athlete, competitor. Tallied six doubles, a team-best three triples and three homers. Missed five weeks of the 2002 season with a strained MCL suffered on April 12 against UC Santa Barbara.

COMMENTS: One varsity letter. Set school records for putouts (60) and assists (138) by a third baseman and his fielding percentage of .938 was the best by a USC Gamecock third baseman in more than 25 years. Led the team in grand slam home runs with two and batted .323, fourth highest on the team. Had 14 homers and batted in 64 runs. As a first year player received the Rookie of the Year Award. While in high school, twice selected in 50th round of the major league free agent draft, by the Boston Red Sox and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
