Bumgarner Dealing In First Two Starts

LHP Madison Bumgarner struck out nine batters in 5 2/3 innings in his first two exhibition starts. He walked one and allowed three hits. In one stretch, he struck out four straight Padres.

"The only real difference I see is I'm focusing on these games like they're regular-season games," said Bumgarner, who started 0-6 last year.

--RHP Ryan Vogelsong, hoping to make the season-opening rotation after hurting his back lifting weights before spring training, is throwing off a mound. The Giants tentatively plan for Bumgarner to extend to five innings before the end of the exhibition season. "He can be on the club with that," manager Bruce Bochy said.

--RHP was beaten up by the Rockies in his second exhibition start. In the same game, Colorado LHP Jamie Moyer, 49, cruised through two scoreless innings: five groundouts and a strikeout. So Lincecum was in no mood to complain. "I was terrible, and I'm the one who says, 'Wow, he's 49 and he's going to go back out there,' " Lincecum said. "He's probably telling me to shut up right now. I will."

--OF Melky Cabrera hit three homers in the first week, including two in one game -- one right-handed, one left-handed. Cabrera was hitting .588 (10-for-17) and making management look smart. He was acquired from the Royals in the LHP Jonathan Sanchez trade as a measure to beef up an offense that ranked last in the NL in runs scored.

--LHP Barry Zito co-wrote a song, "Butterflies," that will be featured in a new movie starring Eddie Murphy, "A Thousand Words." Zito's father, Joe, was a musician and arranged for Nat King Cole. Music could be Zito's next career. His seven-year, $126 million contract expires after the 2013 season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 289 -- Days between games for Buster Posey, who returned to the field in the March 9 exhibition at Scottsdale Stadium.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I thought they really loved me. Then I turned around and I saw it was Buster," -- Pitcher Matt Cain on cheers from Giants fans before Buster Posey's first game since May, when he sustained ankle and leg injuries in a home-plate collision.
