ST Notebook: Giants Fall To Cubs

Solid game from Angel Pagan. Late rally not quite enough. Pitching staff falters in loss to Cubs. Final Score: Cubs 5, Giants 4.

--OF Angel Pagan had a great game on both sides of the ball, really his best in a Giants uniform thus far. Pagan brought the crowd out of their seats in the second frame on a beautiful diving catch in left-center field. It was a tough, slicing liner off the bat of Steve Clevenger.

Pagan also got a chance to air out the wheels on offense, lining a triple to left center in the top of the fifth and plating Brandon Crawford for the Giants' first run.

Leading off the eighth frame, Pagan lined a broken-bat double to right field. The speedy 30-year-old then scored the second run of the game for the Giants, on a double from Mike Fontenot. Fontenot himself came around to score on a single from catcher Chris Stewart.

OFs Justin Christian and Tyler Graham then showed off the speed. With two outs, Christian beat out an infield single and Graham laid down a gorgeous bunt single to plate Stewart, cutting the Cubs' lead to 5-4.

--OF Gary Brown lined a single to right field with one out in the ninth, only Brown's second hit thus far. Brown then swiped his first bag of the spring, taking second easily. Unfortunately the Giants couldn't bring Brown home.

--LHP Madison Bumgarner, who according to broadcaster (and former Giant) Shawn Estes was leaving his pitches up in the third, got touched up for two runs on three hits in that frame. Bumgarner allowed another run in the fourth, allowing three runs in all on seven hits in his four innings of work.

--RHP Sergio Romo had his first rough outing in a long time, giving up two runs on two hits -- including a monster home run from former Padre farmhand Anthony Rizzo. Romo hung a slider, and the extremely powerful 22-year-old Rizzo made him pay for it.

The Giants will stay in Scottsdale for a showdown with the Indians. Matt Cain (1-0, 0.00 ERA) matches up against the tribe's newly acquired right-hander, Derek Lowe (0-1, 5.40 ERA).
