2003 Draft Review: Rounds 9-15

The 2003 First-Year Draft is finished and now we look to see what the future may hold for the San Francisco Giants. Through the upcoming weeks, we will be looking at whom the organization has obtained. This week a look at Round 9-15: Kellen Ludwig, Jesse Schmidt, Jeff Peterson, Ryan Sadowski, Nick Conte, Spider Martin, and J Thurmond.

#9 KELLEN LUDWIG (OVERALL 273)

Comments: Drafted twice before, by Toronto in 2001 (34th round) and San Francisco in 2002 (12th round). Ranked 24th best Junior College Pitcher by Baseball America. Clocked up to 95-96 mph. Lead team in 2002 with 5 saves. 1-1 record with a 3.18 ERA in 28 innings of work.

Infrequent circle change that fades. Agile for size. Durable. Lacks useable change. Has command and mixes pitches well.

Comments: Appeared in seven games in relief and accumulated a 1-0 record with a 8.10 ERA in 6.2 innings. Struck out nine and walked five. Fired season-high 1.2 innings with three strikeouts vs. College of Charleston March 13. In first collegiate outing he fired one inning and gave up two hits and no runs Feb. 3 vs. Charleston Southern. Pitched scoreless and hitless inning striking out three against Siena Feb. 24. Struck out at least one in five of seven showings. In four of seven outings on the mound he did not allow a run. Played for the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plains League in the summer of 2002.Out of the bullpen with the Steamers, made 16 appearances and went 2-3 and was tied for fifth in the league with five saves. Had a team-leading 1.26 ERA in 28.2 innings and struck out 37 while holding opposing hitters to a .138 batting average.

Comments: Son of Giants' head trainer, Stan Conte. Drafted three years ago by Giants in 49th round. Started 44 games for St. Mary's as the catcher. Second on the team with a .335 batting average. In 2002, started 37 games with 42 appearances as the Gaels? catcher, finished with a .237 batting average in 131 at-bats - totaled 31 hits with seven doubles, two triples and two homeruns. Recorded 17 RBI and 20 runs. Was second on the team with 195 putouts. Recorded six multi-hit games. Caught 16 potential base stealers. Garnered second team all-league honors as a senior and was a member of the All-San Mateo County team.

Comments: Was a very steady long reliever for the Titans in 2002. Struck out 29 and walked just five in 36.0 innings. Did not walk a batter in his first 23-plus innings of work.Allowed just two homers and six doubles and opponents batted .239. Had a sizzling 1.65 ERA in Big West play (16.1 innings). Picked up his first save with two scoreless innings against UC Riverside on May 10.

Had his 2002 season cut short by a sore arm suffered in a 120-pitch outing vs. Georgia Tech. Played briefly with the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod League.
