The Monster Will Mash
Yasiel Puig has been the center of attention for most of the Dodgers' camp. And for good reason. After signing for $42 million, expectations are levied, regardless of the ability of the players to meet them. So far, Puig hasn't just met expectations, he's far exceeded them.
In his first at bat, Puig homered. In his second, he singled and stole second. His third resulted in an out, as he tried stretching a single into a double. His fourth was a triple to center. That gives him an impressive .500 average so far this spring.
While Mattingly and Colletti have balked at the idea of Puig starting the season on the major league roster, neither committed to that sentiment today. Is it possible that the 22 year old who has played just a month's worth of games in nearly two years could succeed in the majors?
-Chris Capuano had a nice start, surrendering just a solo home run to Yoenis Cespedes in 5.2 innings. Mark Lowe, J.P. Howell and Brandon League combined for 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.
-Jerry Hairston hit his first homer of the spring and is batting .231. Juan Uribe's two hit day rose his average to .361. Skip Schumaker also had a pair of hits, including a double, and is now batting .275. Jeremy Moore replaced Andre Ethier and had a hit in two at bats. Carl Crawford went 1 for 4.
