After winning 100 games, the Giants were the first playoff team eliminated. A possible result of their second straight offseason shuffling: Bonds could be the only everyday player still around from the 2002 World Series team when they take the field next year.
RHP Jason Schmidt (17-5, 2.34) -- A Cy Young candidate; facing elbow surgery to repair a tendon.
RHP Sidney Ponson (3-6, 3.71) -- July add-on pitched poorly in Game 2 of division series, awaiting free agency.
LHP Kirk Rueter (10-5, 4.53) -- Injured much of second half; an off year despite record.
RHP Jerome Williams (7-3, 3.30) -- First Giants rookie pitcher to start a postseason game since 1937.
RHP Dustin Hermanson (2-1, 3.00) -- Late season acquisition was serviceable in the rotation down the stretch.
RHP Robb Nen (0-0, 0.00) -- All-Star closer missed entire season with bum shoulder, hopes to be ready for spring training.
RHP Tim Worrell (4-4, 2.87, 38 saves) -- Nen's replacement better than expected in first full season as closer.
RHP Joe Nathan (12-4, 2.96) -- Valuable bullpen addition after comeback from shoulder surgery; led all big-league relievers in wins.
LHP Scott Eyre (2-1, 3.32) -- Career-high 74 appearances, second most by a lefty in Giants history (Mark Davis had 77 in '85).
LHP Jason Christiansen (0-0, 5.10) -- Returned from Tommy John surgery; lefties hit .208 off him.
RHP Jim Brower (8-5, 3.96) -- Arrived from Montreal in Livan Hernandez deal in March and proved better than expected.
RHP Matt Herges (1-0, 2.30) -- Acquired from San Diego and peaked at season's end; one earned run in final 12 2/3 innings.
RHP Kevin Correia (3-2, 3.66) -- Impressive in seven late season starts.
LHP Chad Zerbe (1-1, 4.71) -- Not relied on as much as in 2002, didn't make playoff roster.
Benito Santiago (.280, 11 HRs, 56 RBIs) -- He's 38 and not expected to return in 2004.
Yorvit Torrealba (.260, 4 HRs, 29 RBIs) -- Could be Opening Day catcher; better defensively than Santiago.
1B J.T. Snow (.273, 8 HRs, 51 RBIs) -- Best year since 2000 but not good enough for the Giants to pick up his 2004 option.
2B Ray Durham (.285, 8 HRs, 33 RBIs, 7-for-14 in steal attempts) -- Limited to 110 games in first year of four-year contract.
SS Rich Aurilia (.277, 13 HRs, 58 RBIs) -- Free agent, not expected to return.
3B Edgardo Alfonzo (.259, 13 HRs, 81 RBIs) -- Rebounded after awful first half and hit .306 with 54 RBIs in final 71 games; first year of four-year pact.
2B/SS Neifi Perez (.256, 1 HR, 31 RBIs) -- Looking for a starting job next season, but he can be a liability at the plate.
3B Pedro Feliz (.247, 16 HRs, 48 RBIs) -- Averaged one homer every 14.7 at-bats but hasn't been able to win an everyday job.
1B Andres Galarraga (.301, 12 HRs, 42 RBIs) -- Expected to retire, two homers shy of 400.
2B Eric Young (.197, 0 HRs, 3 RBIs) -- Acquired from Milwaukee in August to be super sub for Durham but struggled at plate and was 3-for-8 in steal attempts.
LF Barry Bonds (.341, 45 HRs, 90 RBIs) -- Should get his sixth MVP, but he's still without a World Series ring after seven postseasons.
CF Marquis Grissom (.300, 20 HRs, 79 RBIs) -- Batted third much of the season until tailing off late in season; one more year on contract.
RF Jose Cruz Jr. (.250, 20 HRs, 68 RBIs) -- Defensive whiz (18 outfield assists), but also a strikeout king (121); has a mutual option, and it's a good bet he won't return.
OF Jeffrey Hammonds (.242, 4 HRs, 13 RBIs) -- July acquisition from Milwaukee, able fill-in for Bonds when he went on bereavement leave.
OF Marvin Benard (.197, 0 HRs, 4 RBIs) -- After contributing little while pocketing $11.1 million over three years, it's bye, bye Marvin.
MEDICAL WATCH: RHP Jason Schmidt (facing possible elbow surgery because of a torn tendon in his right elbow) RHP Robb Nen (underwent third shoulder surgery and was sidelined the entire season), OF Marvin Benard (underwent knee surgery one day after he learned he wasn't on the postseason roster), RHP Jesse Foppert (will miss all of 2004 following Tommy John surgery).
