Giants Win First Spring Training Game

Though the conditions were not the best, with the wet field and gray skies, the Giants managed to win their first game of spring training against former manager, Dusty Baker and his Chicago Cubs.

Kirk Reuter, who is slated to the be San Francisco Giants number 2 starter, started this afternoon's game against Chicago Cubs pitcher, Matt Clement. Rueter threw only eight pitches, seven of which were strikes. He gave up one run, a home run, to centerfielder Corey Patterson. This was the only run for the Cubs until the ninth inning. With the bases loaded, Tom Goodwin hit a two-run single making it 9-3 Giants.

The Giants kept the hits coming. They started off the game with two singles off the bats of Ray Durham and J.T. Snow. After advancing on Bonds' out, Edgardo Alfonzo hit a grounder, bringing in a run.

They drove in a couple more runs in the second. Rueter brought down a bunt to bring in a run. David Doster popped up in the infield. Cubs second baseman, Todd Walker, ran to catch it, but he slipped and the ball fell in front of him.

With Carlos Zambrano on the mound in the fourth and the bases loaded, Zambrano issued a walk to A. J. Pierzynski. It was now 4-1 Giants.

The big hit came in the seventh. On the first pitch, Jeffrey Hammonds hit a grand slam into deep left field to extend the Giants lead to 8-1 off of pitcher Francis Beltran.

The Giants tacked on another run in the ninth. Catcher Alberto Castillo, blooped an RBI single into left center field.

Notes: In the fourth inning, Giants first baseman Lance Niekro chased a popup in foul territory. With the muddy field, Niekro slipped and fell, twisting his ankle, but it was not a serious injury. The Giants have signed 18 players for one-year contracts: Kevin Correia, Jesse Foppert, Ryan Jensen, Noah Lowry, Merkin Valdez, Jerome Williams, Justin Knoedler, Trey Lundsford, Yorvit Torrealba, Jamie Athas, Angel Chavez, Lance Niekro, Cody Ransom, Jason Ellison, Todd Linden, Dustan Mohr, Tony Torcato, and Carlos Valderrama
