SFDugout Minor League Notebook for 6/13

An in-depth look into the San Francisco Giants minor league affiliates - Fresno Grizzlies (AAA), Norwich Navigators (AA), San Jose Giants (A), and the Hagerstown Suns (A)- the games played on June 13th, and who's hot and who's not.

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA)

Game Notes: Fresno loses 11-7 to the Portland Beavers, despite scoring 3 runs in the first, as David Aardsma got his first loss of the season. Dave Doster led Fresno's offense with 3 hits along with 3 RBI. Lance Niekro had a multi-hit game as well. Kevin Correia started and pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 7 hits for 7 runs and striking out 8 batters. Aardsma allowed 3 inherited runners from Correia to score before he was victimized by Chad Zerbe come in and gave up two more singles to allow his inherited runners from Aardsma to score.

Team Notes: Fresno is now 30-34, 9 games back in the Southern Division of the PCL, but still in 3rd place, 3 games ahead of celler dweller Las Vegas. David Aardsma is now 4-1. Lance Niekro extended his hitting streak to 15 games with his hits.

Norwich Navigators (AA)

Game Notes: The Navigators beat the Akron Aeros, 9-2. Josh Habel limited Akron to only 2 runs in 5 IP. Luke Anderson and Scott Munter followed with 2 scoreless innings of relief apiece. Dan Ortmeier got Norwich on the board with a 2 run double and the Navigators put the game out of reach with 5 runs in the 6th inning, most of them unearned.

Team Notes: The win is their 6th in 7 games, making their record now 32-31, as they moved back into 3rd place in the Northern Division of the Eastern League, 5.5 games back of the leading Binghampton Mets and half game behind 2nd place. However, Mike Cervnenak injured himself scoring the first run of the game for the Navigators. There were no news on the status of his injury.

San Jose Giants (A)

Game Notes: San Jose Giants beat the Ports 10-5 as Matt Cain won the game, pitching 5 innings and allowing 3 hits and 0 walks for 2 runs (two run homer) with 5 strikeouts. After giving up the 2-run homer, Cain then dominated by retiring 14 of the next 15 batters faced. Julio Cordido, Brad Vericker, Brian Buscher, Aaron Hornostaj, and Anthony LaBarbera led the offense with 2 hits apiece. Cordido had a double and 3 RBI while Vericker had a double, a homer and 4 RBI. Brian Buscher had a triple. A trio of relievers - Billy Sadler, Anthony Pannone, and Brian Burres - could not keep Stockton from scoring but the lead was so large that the Giants still won going away.

Team Notes: Matt Cain got his 5th win in 5 starts and is now 7-1, best winning percentage in the California League. His 1.86 ERA is 2nd best in the league and his 89 strikeouts are 1st in the league as his strikeout/walk ratio is a hair over 5:1. Cordido got his 15th double of the season. Vericker hit his 9th homer of the season, second on the team to Dan Trumble, who has 14. Cordido now has 34 RBI, good for 2nd on the team, and Vericker has 40 RBI, still leading the team.

Hagerstown Suns (A)

Game Notes: Despite good starting pitching from Travis Nesmith, the Suns lost in extra innings 4-2 to the Lake County Captains when the Captains scored 2 runs in the top of the 11th and held on to win. Nesmith went 5.0 IP, giving up 3 hits and 4 walks for 2 runs (1 earned) with 1 strikeout. Mike Musgrave and Joe Bateman was able to shut down Lake County for a combined 5 innings but Tim Alvarez could not do the job this time and gave up 2 runs in his one inning of relief. The top of the lineup failed, going a combined 0 for 21 for the first four batters and only able to muster up two walks total in offense. Mike Wagner and Brian Munhall led the way with 2 hits each in a 6 hit total offense, no extra base hits by anyone. Even the two runs were unearned as it was two passed balls that allowed the Suns' runs to score.

Team Notes: Hagerstown now rests in last place at 27-34, 11 games back of the lead. Did we mention that Nathan Schierholtz was named to the Sally League's All-Star game? He is among the league leaders in five major offensive categories including extra-base hits, doubles, and home runs. However, a replacement will have to be selected from the remaining Suns as Schierholtz was just promoted Monday to the high-A San Jose Giants. Johany Abreu was sent down from San Jose to take Schierholtz's place.
