This Week in Giants Baseball History, January 24-3

For those wondering, Tsuyoshi Shinjo is in no way related to this author.

January 24
The Carmel Kid: Former Giant Atlee Hammaker was born on this date back in 1958, in nearby Carmel, CA. Who could have known that the 1983 All-Star Game was the beginning of his downfall?

January 25
This Bell Rang for Only One Season at Pac Bell: On this date in 2002 the Giants traded away newly-acquired Desi Relaford and cash to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for slick-fielding David Bell. Bell left shortly after Game 7 that postseason, thereby ushering in the Fonzi Era.

January 26
Probably Took Batting Practice Advice from Kuip: Former Giants infielder Joe Pettini was born on this date back in 1955, in Wheeling, WV. All four of his big league seasons (1980-83) were spent in orange and black, and he hit one home run during that span.

January 27
Just Like the Demons Leaving Pac Bell: On this date back in 1956, the New York Giants football team formally switched their home field from the Polo Grounds to Yankee Stadium. The Giants baseball franchise followed suit two years later, relocating to San Francisco in 1958.

January 28
Bad Import: Former Giants outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo was born on this date back in 1972, in Fukuoka, Japan. Acquired by the Giants with much fanfare in 2002, Shinjo's game never matched the flashiness of his hair, and he lasted one season in orange and black.

January 29
Means "Smith" in German, But Might as Well Be "Ace": Current Giants Ace Jason Schmidt was born on this date back in 1973, in Lewiston, ID. He is 55-21 since donning a Giants uniform. Happy 32nd, Schmiddy!

January 30
To Walk or Not to Walk: Sixty years before Barry Bonds' career began, the Major League Rules Commission met on this date back in 1926 to discuss the possible elimination of the intentional walk. No action was taken, and the rubber chicken toll at Pac Bell continues to mount.

Don Shin eats, breathes, thinks, and bleeds in Orange and Black. Pac Bell Park officially opened on his 25th birthday (the one year he decided to move out of the Bay Area!!!). For the 2000 playoff drive, he dyed his hair orange while studying in Korea. He watched Game 6 of the '02 World Series at a restaurant in LA, and couldn't finish his meal afterwards. Feel free to write him at to commiserate, cheer, and complain.
