Minor League Notebook - April 12th, 2005

Fresno gets into a high scoring game, while Norwich sees just one run between both teams. Yep, it's the farm.

Fresno (AAA): Fresno 13, Portland 3
WP: Brian Cooper (1-1)
LP: Justin Germano (0-2)
Game Recap:
It was all about the offense for the Grizzlies on Tuesday. Brian Dallimore, Todd Linden and Justin Knoedler led the offense explosion. Dallimore led off the scoring with a home run in the 4th, and went 3 for 5 for the day with 3 runs scored. Linden went 3 for 4 with a 2 run homer in the 8th, a double and 3 RBI for the day. Knoedler went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. On the mound, Brian Cooper took the start and gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and a walk in 6.1 innings. Al Levine, making his first appearance for Fresno since resigning with the Giants, earned a hold, pitching two thirds of an inning.

Game Notes:
Al Levine pitched 9 scoreless appearances in Spring Training, but saw he wasn’t going to make the major league roster with the Giants. He asked for, and got, his release to look for a new team to sign with after his impressive spring. However, no luck. So Levine signed a minor league contract with the Giants and went to Fresno, which may be a good idea considering the bullpen problems in San Francisco right now.

Notable Performances:
Todd Linden – 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, .286
Brian Dallimore – 3-5, 1 HR, 3 R, 1 RBI, .348

Norwich (AA): New Hampshire 1, Norwich 0
WP: Ismael Ramirez(1-1)
LP: Alfredo Simon (0-2)
Game Recap:
Scoring may have been the story in Fresno, but in Norwich, it was the Navigators finding themselves on the wrong end of a pitching duel. Alfredo Simon went 5 innings, but only gave up 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6. Alberto Montes went the final three innings, giving up only 1 hit and no walks the rest of the way. The only run came in in the 5th on three singles. Offensively, the Navigators managed only 3 hits, with Fred Lewis, Julian Benavidez and Timothy Hutting managing one a piece.

Notable Performances:
Fred Lewis – 1-4, 1 SO, .308
Alfredo Simon – 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 3.60 ERA
Alberto Montes – 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 7.20 ERA

San Jose (High-A): Lancaster 6, San Jose 3
WP: Garrett Mock (1-1)
LP: Ben Thurmond (0-1)
SV: Dustin Glant (1)
Game Recap:
The Giants jumped out to an early lead, but were unable to hold it in a 6-3 loss to the Jethawks. Clay Timpner started the game with a double, and later scored on a wild pitch. The Giants then put together three straight singles by Eddy Martinez-Esteve, Eliezer Alfonzo and Nate Schierholtz to score a second run. The Giants added a third when Travis Ishikawa was hit by a pitch, and came around on an Alfonzo single. But Ben Thurmond was unable to hold the lead, as he gave up a double and single to lead off the fourth, and then gave up 2 straight home runs to lose the lead and eventually take the loss.

Augusta (Mid-A): Augusta 6, Rome 2
WP: Mike Musgrave (1-0)
LP: James Parr (0-1)
SV: Brian Wilson (2)
Game Recap:
Augusta fell behind early, but found a way to come back to win against the Rome Braves. Starter Mike Musgrave gave up 2 runs in the first, but only one was earned after an error by Marcus Sanders. But Augusta came back to tie the game in the 3rd on a 2 run homer by Brian Horwitz, then took the lead on a 2 RBI single by Alex Requena in the 4th.
