Minor League Notebook - April 28th, 2005

Who carried a No Hitter into the 8th? Who won a game by walking with the bases loaded in extra innings? And who just hit the first home run in Northern California's brand newest beautiful ballpark? Yep, just another day in the minors.

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Fresno 2, Las Vegas 0
WP: M. Cain (3-0)
LP: T. Nall (0-2)
SV: K. Correia (3)
Game Recap:
Matt Cain came 5 outs away from a no hitter, and settled for 8.1 innings, facing just one over the minimum number of batters, giving up just an 8th inning hit, and a 2nd inning walk that was erased on a double play. He also struck out 10. After giving up the hit, he was lifted, and Brandon Buffer finished the 8th, and Kevin Correia picked up his 3rd save. The Grizzlies offense only managed one more hit than Las Vegas, but Fresno’s offense came in the 6th, and only had 1 hit to fuel it. After Justin Knoedler doubled to lead off the inning, and Cain struck out, Adam Shabala walked. Then Mickey Lopez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Brian Dallimore was plunked to drive in a run, and Linden hit a sacrifice fly for the last run.

Notable Performances:
Matt Cain: 7.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 SO, 1.75 ERA
Justin Knoedler: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 R
Brian Dallimore: 0-2, HBP, 1 RBI, .231
Todd Linden: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 SO, .270
Kevin Correia: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 4.82 ERA

Norwich Navigators (AA): Norwich 12, Trenton 11 (10)
WP: J. Accardo (1-0)
LP: J. Pope (0-1)
SV: W. Sadler (1)
Game Notes:
The Navigators overcame a 9-3 deficit, and won in extra innings in one of the more unlikely ways possible: off a bases loaded walk. The 10th started with a single and a sacrifice bunt. After Tim Hutting walked, and Fred Lewis singled to load the bases, Anthony Labarbera drew a walk to score a runner. That was all Norwich would get in the inning, but it was enough. The Navigators used 6 pitchers, with starter Alfredo Simon going only 3 innings and giving up 5 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. Jeremy Accardo blew a save by allowing an inherited runner to score in the 8th to tie the game at 11, but he picked up the win.

Notable Performances:
Fred Lewis: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .273
Tyler Von Schell: 3-5,2 R, 1 2B, .194
Daniel Ortmeier: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .231
Anthony LaBarbera: 2-5, 1 2B, 5 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .277
Alfredo Simon: 3.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 7.56 ERA
Brian Mazone: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 3.48 ERA
Jeremy Accardo: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, BS, 0.93 ERA

San Jose Giants (High-A): Stockton 7, San Jose 4
WP: J. Windsor (1-1)
LP: B. Thurmond (2-2)
SV: A. Santos (4)
Game Notes:
The Stockton Ports won their debut in their new stadium, but Travis Ishikawa christened it, hitting a home run to lead off the third for the stadium’s first home run. The score gave the Giants a 1-0 lead, but Ben Thurmond couldn’t hold it, giving up 6 runs (4 earned) in 4 innings.

Notable Performances:
Travis Ishikawa: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 E, .292
Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, .324
Todd Jennings: 2-3, PO, .266
Ben Thurmond: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 6.11 ERA

Augusta GreenJackets (Mid-A): Augusta 8, Charleston 7
WP: B. Wilson (1-1)
LP: R. Vanderplow (2-1)
Game Recap:
Augusta blew two leads late, but were able to score that last run to give them a close win. They opened the inning with a 2 base error, but a crazy inning that included ground outs, an out at the plate, an intentional walk and a passed ball ended when Marcus Sanders singled home Simon Klink to win the game. Brian Wilson picked up the win by pitching 1.2 perfect innings.

Simon Klink: 2-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, .235
Alex Requena: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB, .250
Mike Musgrave: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO, 5.06 ERA
