Minor League Notebook - May 7th-8th, 2005

It was a wet and wild weekend for the minor leagues. Some rainouts got punctuated by late inning comebacks, bases loaded walks, and a return to action by Jesse Foppert. Just another minor league weekend.

May 7:
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA):
Fresno 8, Tucson 7
WP: S. Munter (1-3, 5.56)
LP: B. Medders (1-1, 4.22)

Game Recap:
Fresno’s 3 runs in the final two innings gave the Grizzlies a win in the desert, but the news wasn’t all good for returning starter Jesse Foppert. Down 7-5 in the 8th, Justin Knoedler came around on a Yamid Haad double. In the ninth, Brian Dallimore walked, and scored on Mike Cervenak’s home run to give the Grizzlies the lead they needed. Cervenak’s home run capped off a 3 for 5 day with 3 RBI. Foppert, returning from a blister injury on his finger, was only able to go 3 innings, giving up 7 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks.

WP: R. Sadowski (2-1, 4.50)
LP: J. Danks (2-2, 2.56)
Game Recap:
Ryan Sadowski put up a great performance, no hitting the Blaze for 6.2 innings. He walked one for his only blemish, but struck out 11 to make up for it. Eugene Espineli came in after an error allowed Sadowski’s second baserunner in the 7th inning. Espineli went the final 2.1 innings, and gave up just 1 hit and 2 walks to hold the shutout. The offense’s biggest hit came off the bat of Nate Schierholtz, who hit his 2nd home run of the season in the 5th, scoring 2 runs. Clay Timpner went 2 for 5 with a triple and a stolen base.

SV: R. Troncoso (1)
Game Recap:
Augusta’s offense was only able to collect 5 hits, while starter Darren Sack gave up 9 in only 2+ innings. The deficit was too much for Augusta to overcome, as their only score came from the bat of Jonathan Armitage, who scored Alex Requena with a 6th inning single.

May 8:
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Fresno 9, Tucson 7
WP: B. Puffer (4-2, 2.37)
LP: W. Abreu (1-2, 6.20)
SV: K. Correia (6)
Game Recap:
Matt Cain struggled with his control for his second straight game, but the offensive rebirth of Todd Linden and Brian Dallimore kept the Grizzlies winning. Cain only gave up 3 hits in 4 innings, but 7 walks and a grand slam led to him giving up 6 runs. But the offense backed him up. Dallimore had a 1st inning RBI triple to start a 3 run rally early, and a solo home run in the 3rd. However, down 7-4 in the 8th, Fresno found itself needing to rally late, and it was Linden to the rescue. Linden walked in the 8th, advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two. In the 9th, a 3 base error led to Ramirez scoring another run to get Fresno within one, and then it was Linden hitting a 3 run home run to cap off the comeback.

Notable Performances:
Brian Dallimore: 3-4, 3 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, .248
Todd Linden: 1-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SO, .321
Mike Cervenak: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, .318
Matt Cain: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 7 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR, 3.93 ERA
Kevin Correia: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 2.87 ERA

Norwich Navigators (AA): Portland 3, Norwich 2 (10 Innings)
WP: M. Delcarmen (3-2, 5.40)
LP: B. Mazone (1-2, 2.76)
Game Recap:
It was the walks that did in the Navigators. Brian Mazone started the 10th inning with a strikeout, but 2 walks and a wild pitch later, he was replaced by Anthony Pannone. Unfortunately, the change did nothing, as Pannone walked two more, including a bases loaded walk to give the Sea Dogs the win. The game erased a solid start by Chris Begg, who went 7.1 innings and gave up 2 runs, 1 coming in after he left.

Notable Performances:
Randy Walter: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 3 SO, .267
Dan Ortmeier: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 SO, .250
Chris Begg: 7.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.95 ERA
