Minor League Notebook - May 21st-22nd, 2005

A double header means twice as much to catch up on in San Jose. And keep an eye on your valuables; the minor league leading base stealer is in the Giants system. Who is he? Just a hint, he had three steals alone on Sunday. Just another day in the minors!

May 21st:

Game Recap:
Patrick Misch remained winless in AAA after giving up 5 runs in 5 innings. He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 while dropping to an 0-4 record in 9 games. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies only got 7 hits, their one run coming on a solo home run by Mickey Lopez in the 1st inning. Also, Kevin Correia’s recent struggles continued, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in 2 innings of relief.

Brian Burres pitched a solid 5.2 innings to get a win, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Chris Curry hit a 3 run double in the 8th inning to help seal the win in a 6 run 8th inning. Daniel Ortmeier had 2 RBI and a 2-4 day, and Anthony Labarbera added 2 RBI of his own.

Game Recaps:
San Jose ended up getting swept in a Saturday doubleheader at Modesto, even though they extended their second game to a regular 9 innings trying to win. In Game 1, Garrett Broshuis got knocked around giving up 7 runs on 9 hits in just 3.1 innings. Nate Schierholtz had an RBI triple and Travis Ishikawa had 2 RBI to provide some offense for San Jose. In Game 2, Modest got a run in the 6th off of Eugene Espineli to tie the game, and won in the 9th off of back to back doubles to lead off the inning.

Game Recap:
A 4 run 7th inning helped lead Augusta to a victory over the Grasshoppers. After back-to-back one out walks to Jonathan Armitage and Brian Horwitz, Michael Wagner singled to load the bases. Brad Vericker drew a bases loaded walk. Simon Klink picked up an RBI on a single, and Stephen Holm picked up another RBI on a groundout. Ben Thurmond got the win after a 6 inning, 2 run start, walking 1 and striking out 7.

Game Recap:
Todd Linden hit his 12th home run of the year as the Grizzlies routed the Iowa Cubs. Linden’s 3 run homer in the 6th inning left him trailing only Joe Dillon in the Pacific Coast League. Dillon was promoted to the Florida Marlins’ major league roster last week. Brian Cooper was the beneficiary of the offense, giving up only 1 run in 6.2 innings. Mike Cervenak also went 2 for 5 in the win.

Meanwhile, Merkin Valdez had a bumpy evening, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and a walk in 5 innings. Dan Ortmeier went 2-3 with a double, while Brian Buscher went 2 for 4.

Jesse Floyd threw 1 hit ball for 7 innings to lead the Giants to a win. Floyd also gave up 3 walks but no runs with 7 K’s, while Joe Bateman allowed an unearned run on 2 hits in 2 innings of relief. Offensive, it was Travis Ishikawa and Todd Jennings leading the way. Ishikawa went 2-3 with 2 doubles and scored 2 runs, while Jennings was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI.

The GreenJackets went homer happy in a win over the Grasshoppers, hitting 5 on the day. Marcus Sanders hit a 2 run homer as the second hitter of the game and Michael Wagner added another to get the Jackets off right. Jonathan Armitage adding 2 home runs of his own, and Simon Klink had the 5th. The runs gave Osiris Matos the breathing room he needed, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, over 7 innings. Sanders also stole 3 bases on the day giving him the league leading total of 27.
