Minor League Notebook: June 4th-5th

The Giants play the hated Dodgers! Well, sorta. AAA clubs Fresno (of the Giants) and Las Vegas (of the Dodgers) meet up for some minor league rivalry in the PCL!

June 4:
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA):
Las Vegas 8, Fresno 7
WP: P. Mahomes (5-2, 3.45)
LP: M. Kinney 90-2, 10.00)

Matt Kinney suffered a road bump in his attempt to return to the majors, giving up 7 runs on 12 hits in 5 innings to the 51’s. Yamid Haad went 4 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI to lead the Grizzlies offense, and Adam Shabala and Brian Dallimore each went 3 for 4. Kevin Correia also had scoreless inning in relief for the Grizzlies. Doug DeVore, recently acquired by the Giants in a trade for Matt Herges, went 1 for 4 with a walk and run scored.

A fielding error by pitcher Brian Mazone really hurt him, leading to one unearned run in a game that was decided by just the one run. Mazone gave up all 3 runs in 3.2 innings pitched to take the loss. Carlos Valderrama was the only Navigator with more than 1 hit, going 2 for 4.

Both teams pounded out 19 hits, but Visalia edged the offensive powerhouse San Jose Giants on Saturday. Gregorio Martinez gave up 7 runs in 2.1 innings in the start, but it was Joe Bateman who gave up the losing run in the 9th. Clay Timpner went 3 for 6, and Kevin Frandsen went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles.

Starter Mike Musgrave gave up 5 runs early, but Brian Horwitz and Simon Klink helped lead the Augusta offense to a comeback, extra innings win. Carlos Sosa and Horwitz each picked up RBI in the 10th for the win. Horwitz was 3 for 6 on the day, and Klink added 2 doubles and 2 RBI on a 3 for 5 day.

Recent acquisition Doug DeVore, who came to the Giants organization in the Matt Herges trade, hit two home runs to help the Grizzlies win. DeVore collected 4 RBI on the day. Adam Shabala had a home run of his own, going 2 for 4 and getting 2 RBI. Patrick Misch started the day, going 4.2 innings and giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks. Taschner picked up h is 3rd save of the year by pitching another scoreless inning, lowering his ERA to 0.34.

Brian Burres overcame some early troubles to earn his 3rd win of the year. Burres gave up 2 runs in the first inning on a 2 run homer, but that would be all the scoring he and closer Alfredo Simon would let the Fisher Cats score. Simon, converted to closer after a rough time as starter and former closer Jeremy Accardo was called to San Francisco, earned his 5th save of the year and struck out 4 in 2 innings. Daniel Ortemeir hit a solo homer in the 8th for insurance.

Visalia scored 7 runs in the 7th inning , with a key error by Jake Wald leading to 4 of them being unearned, to send San Jose to their 2nd straight loss. Garrett Broshuis gave up 4 runs in 5.0 innings in the start. Eddy Martinez-Esteve went 4-4 with 3 doubles, 2 RBI, and a walk, but despite getting 17 total hits, the Giants only scored 7 runs.

Jonathan Sanchez was only able to go 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks, and Augusta’s offense was shut down by Kannapolis starter Glovany Gonzalez, only managing a single hit in 7 innings off of him. Alex Requena went 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base.
