Minor League Notebook: June 27th

A quiet day in the minors, 3 teams having the day off. But things still happened. A couple of Fresno outfielders trying to make their cases to be the next major leaguers, and the two rookie teams have at it. Just another (quiet) day in the minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Colorado Springs 5, Fresno 4

Fresno’s offense had some problems knocking runs in, getting 12 hits, but only 4 extra base hits, 3 of which generated all the RBI’s. Tony Torcato had a 9th inning 2 run homer, and Adam Shabala and Doug Clark each had doubles for an RBI. Clark was 4 for 5 on the day. Meanwhile, Patrick Misch suffered his 7th loss of the year, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits in 5.1 innings.

The Volcanoes got 12 hits, but were only able to plate 3 runs. Mike Mooney went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, which led to him scoring 2 runs, but it was unable to get the rest of the team to hit. Mooney’s doubles were the only extra base hits of the day for Salem-Keizer. Nick Pereira gave up 2 runs in 3 innings in the start, and Benigro Cepeda gave up 3 more in 1.2 innings of work to put the game out of reach.

Ariel Nunez had the big day for the rookies, going 3 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI. Meanwhile, Bradley Groth went 1 for 2, but drew 2 of the team’s only 3 walks and scored 2 runs on the day. Pitcher John Grogan got the win after giving up an unearned run in the 8th, but striking out all 4 outs he got and finishing the 9th for the win. Chris Nieto had the best day amongst the pitchers, going 3 scoreless innings.
