Minor League Notebook: June 28th

It wasn't just another day in the Minors today! The California League had it's All-Star contest against the Carolina League. That, and the South Atlantic League had it's game scheduled today...what happened? And in Fresno, the AAA club tries to make the Giants feel better about Sunday's blowout loss. (Well, that's the story I'm sticking with.) It's All-Star Day in the Minors!

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Colorado Springs 25, Fresno 7

Fresno starter Brad Hennessey gave up 5 runs in 4 innings, Jeremy Fikac gave up 5 in one inning, Brandon Villafuerte gave up 4 in his inning, but it was Mitch Wylie’s 7 runs allowed and only getting one out that made this game look like the AAA squad was trying to make the big league team feel good after last Sunday’s shutout loss against Oakland.

San Jose Giants (High-A): CAL LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME
Carolina League 8, California League 0.
WP: D. Haigwood
LP: C. Cordeiro
The Carolina League All-Stars took it to the California League, limiting the west coasters to 4 total hits and a walk, while they nailed California League pitching for 8 runs on 17 hits. Hometown representative Nick Markakis from Carolina’s Fredrick Keys won the MVP award, going 3 for 5 with 2 home runs, and also won the Home Run Derby, blasting 13 homers. San Jose had 4 representatives at the game. Eddy Martinez-Esteve went 0 for 2, but one of his outs was a bloop that was robbed of a hit by second baseman Zach Borowiak, who caught it and then doubled off Brandon Wood from third after Wood had the first hit of the game for the California League. Outfielder Clay Timpner, representing the Giants after Catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, an original selection, was promoted to AA, went 1 for 3. SJ pitcher Jesse Floyd pitched the third, giving up a run on 3 hits and a walk. SJ reliever Joe Bateman got the final two outs of the 8th, giving up a walk and striking out 1.

That let Joseph Martinez off the hook, who had allowed just 1 run over 4 innings. Matt Raguse pitched 4 scoreless innings of his own to get the win. Brian Anderson struck out the side, allowing a hit in the middle, for his 2nd save.
