Minor League Notebook: July 21st

Only 3 of 6 teams may have played, but it was still another day in the minors! That pitcher on everyone's lips in San Francisco had another start; would he regain his waning control? A top propsect outfielder stayed hot. And a hot pitcher blew threw Salem-Keizer.

Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Salt Lake 21, Fresno 5 (10 innings)
WP: D. Bergman (6-3, 2.44)
LP: M. Wylie (0-2, 9.49)
It’s bad enough to lose in extra innings, but it’s worse to get blown out in them. Mitch Wylie had just one out left in the 9th to get with a 5-4 lead to end the game for Fresno, but two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Nick Gorneault’s single to tie the game. In the 10th, a 1 out error started the bad news for the Grizzlies. That was followed by a walk and a single to load the bases again against Wylie, at which point Brandon Puffer came in. Puffer proceeded to give up a single that allowed what would be the winning run to come in. But that wouldn’t be it. Puffer gave up a double, a single, a walk, a hit by pitch and a wild pitch and Salt Lake scored 7 in the extra frame to put the game farther out of reach than it should’ve been. That erased one of Matt Cain’s better starts in some time, and Todd Linden’s 24th home run of the season.

Notable Performances:
Todd Linden: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .348
Edgardo Alfonzo: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, .467
Marquis Grissom: 1-4, 1 R, .273
