Minor League Notebook: July 23rd-24th

A busy weekend and some tough losses for the system. One of the top pitchign prospects took a rough loss, but a couple of offensive prospects woke up. 12 innings were played in Augusta one day, and oh yea, how about those streaking rookies (and not in a college frat sort of way)? Just another weekend in the minors!

July 23rd
Fresno Grizzlies (AAA): Portland 6, Fresno 1
WP: M. Thompson (1-0, 0.00)
LP: J. Fikac (3-7, 5.13)
Fresno found itself getting 1 hit in 7 innings by Mike Thompson, a pitcher making his AAA debut. The 1 hit was by Adam Shabala, who also drew a walk against Thompson, and Shabala was the only baserunner who reached against him. Doug Clark hit a pinch hit home run for the only other Grizzly hit and to avoid the shutout. Jeremy Fikac gave up 4 runs in 4 innings, and Eugene Espineli gave up 2 more runs in 3 innings.

Merkin Valdez was hit hard by the Rock Cats on Saturday, giving up 7 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks through 5.2 innings. He did strike out 8, but his ERA blew up to 3.38. The Navigators tried to rally by scoring 4 runs in the 8th, powered by an Eliezer Alfonzo 3 run homer, but it wasn’t enough. Fred Lewis went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles on the day.

LP: R. Sadowski (5-5, 4.90)
Ryan Sadowski gave up 6 runs in 5 innings, and San Jose couldn’t get its offense going in a loss to the Mavericks. Todd Jennings and Guillermo Rodriguez each got 2 hits with a double, but Jake Wald collected two of the three SJ RBI with a 9th inning single.

It took 12 innings, but Augusta came out on top in the end. Carlos Sosa had 3 RBI, including a 2 run homer, and Steve Holm had a solo home run of his own in the 12th to win the game. Former starter Craig Whitaker mad the start, and went only 1.2 innings, giving up 3 unearned runs on an error by Lisandro Disla and a passed ball by Holm.

Michael Mooney led the Volcano offense to another win, going 2 for 3 with a triple and a 3 run homer, driving in 4 runs in all and scoring 3 himself. David Maroul and Charlie Babineaux Jr. each added RBI. Meanwhile, Nick Pereira continued his hot start by allowing just 1 run in 5 innings of work.

Antoan Richardson managed to steal 3 bases including home plate without the benefit of a hit, getting 2 walks on an 0 for 2 day and helping lead the rookies into a win. Hector Borg went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Paul Lussier got a no decision, going 4 inning in the start, and giving up just 1 run on 7 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts.

Fresno was simply beaten in all ways on Sunday. Starting pitcher Matt Kinney gave up 5 runs in the first inning, and gave up 8 overall in 4.1 innings, and Brandon Villafuerte wasn’t able to do much better, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings of relief. The Grizzlies also only managed 6 hits on the night. They also committed 3 errors, 2 by Michael Cervenak, which led to 4 unearned runs for Portland.

Brian Mazone couldn’t hold the Rock Cats back, giving up 10 hits in 6 innings and 5 runs. New Britain sat on that lead for 7 innings until Norwich finally got it’s run scoring going in the 8th, but it was too late for them to come back. Chris Curry hit a 2 run homer in the 9th, and Tyler Von Schell added a solo shot in the 9th.

San Jose’s offense woke up as Eddy Martinez-Esteve hit his 10th home run of the season and two doubles to help lead the Giants to a big win. Brian Munhall added 5 RBI with a home run, and a double on a 3 for 4 day, and Jake Wald added a 2nd inning grand slam. Brooks McNiven picked up the win with 4 innings of relief of Jesus Reina, who was pulled after facing two batters in the 2nd without getting an out and walking 4.

Augusta scored 3 runs in the 8th and 9th innings to get the win Sunday. Carlos Sosa had an RBI double and Jonathan Armitage followed with an RBI single for run in the 8th to break a 2-2 tie, and Aaron Hornostaj singled in Alex Requena in the 9th to seal the game. Caleb Salankey got a no decision by giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, in 6 innings. Anthony Pannone picked up his first save of the season.

Another day, another win for the streaking rookies. By winning 11-1, they got their 5th win in a row and lead the AZL with a 20-7 record. Top 2005 draft pick Benjamin Copeland hit his first professional home run, a solo shot in the 7th inning. Carlos De La Rosa went 4 shut out innings, giving up 3 hits and no walks with 6 strikeouts.
